A bird population of about 30,750,000 exists in Illinois in summer, according to the study E.begna by Prof. S. A Forbes, this being a

average of 645 biods to the square taile, while the average for the entire 'year appears to be 722 to the square mile. The summer estimate based on 谐 count over a strip of 12 equare miles, showing 7740 birds belonging to 85 species. The principal species, in the order of abundance, were the English sparrow, meadow-lark bronzed grsokle, moura ing dove, dickoisel, redwinged blackbird, prairie horned lark, Aleker, robin and fald sparrow, and these ten species facladed. more than 70 per sent of the birds seen, the English sparraw alone representing 18 per cent. The persistence of the birds in the face of ex traordinary changes in environment is one of the striking impressions of the study. Aside from the result of the introduction of the En glish sparrow, and the direct destruction of gams birds and birds of prog, the main effect of human ccupation seems to have been the withdrawal of the prairie birds from the Indian corn area to the pastores, meadows, and fields of small grain.
