The natatory achievements of the young f Dock swimmers are still exciting comment. The weather on Saturday was all that could be desired for the fourth meeting of the Gyu- hans Clab, and the course was in good sondition, Hut, unfortunately, numerous sports gatherings wors fixed for the same day, and thus the attendance at the Gymkhana showed a consider- able falling off,; · The arrival of His Excellency the Governor and party, who travelled to the Valley by special tram, we announced by the Band of the 3rd Middlesor Regiment before the selections of masio during the afternoon. On the whole the roing was good, but the Bolde

The mos of the day, the Gymkhana Stakes, was again won by Earthquake who snatched it from Astra and Cuscomb by a smart sprint in the home rap. As the winner and his jockey, M. Mackie, passed the grand stand they were grested with herty cheers. The capiusto. of the Casb Sweeps and the Pari Matuet were kept brey during the afternoon, and the weeps paid some rabatantial dividends. The officials of the Clubars as under-

· Many people possess the idea that the Ranitary Board is composed of a body of men whose work may be necessary but whose sayings and doings are not of very great interest. But it is not so.. I have beard of meetings where the dramatic element was conspicuous. I have beard there wore cocasions when joken wore perpetrated and when the proceedings wore decidedly lively. Take last Tuesday's meeting for oxample. How dull it would have been had it not been for Mr. Hooper, who, like the pugnacious Irishman, never misses an opportunity of wheeking at an official bond when it is exposed. Not literally, of course. Wore it otherwise, the standing orders would have to include the Queensbury rules.
The Volunteer Emergency Corps, suggested a few weeks ago, in the Daily Press,-is-an- -accomplished. fast, and a capable body of young men, willing to render assistanse to those in peril on the deep, will assemble on the Prays when typhoons threaten and show that Britons are as ready to brave danger as ever they wore, "The gallantry of the "Astren" bluejackets during the last typhoon ja an example which will be before the Corps and there is little doubt that not a for members will sook to emulate it, should the opportunity be given.
The results which have attended my efforts in ventilating grievances and suggesting new schemes bave brought a number of people to me with ideas to express. The latest suggestion Thave received rofers to a shelter for passengers at the Causeway Bay tram junction.
People proceeding Shackiwan way or returning have to light there and perhaps wait some little time for a car. In disagreeable weather, rainy for instance, it is no joke to stand in that rather expound place, and a shod of some des @ription would afford & abalter from the rain, a shield from the biting blasts of winter, or a protection from the fierce rays of the summer sun. There is ample space for such an erection, Perhaps the General Managers will take note,
Since the days of infanoy I have heard of the goose that lay goldon ogge, and I was delighted the other day to read in a Canadian paper that they breed 'em in China. If you will grant me a free advt., Mr. Editor, I would like to men tion for the information of breeders that I have a consuming desire to procure for my farmyard a few good-laying specimens of these birds. There are no gold-fields in Hongkong which are used as pozitry yards. I believe, so that if any denier is attracted by my offer, I shaff have to insist on a proper guarantee that the birds have been well fattened in a Chinese gold-field.
