The Chairman Gentlemen, The directors report which I have the honour of submitting for the approval of this meeting, and which with your permission we will take a read, is of special interest, for, as stated in the report, it represents the position of the affairs cf the company at the end of the first decade of its existence. If the dats had been available it would have been interesting to have been able to maksa comparison between the older established Brilish and American companies, and this company at the same period in the existence of each in those items which best illustrate the progres a cnm pany in making, such as fcial business in form, total assets-insurance fund and income. the Chinese officials are raising objections to the Company's application on the score of priority of native rigāta, to mine at this spot. I have had a latior from Mr. Stenhouse dated May Jon this point in which he states:-
"It is proved without any doubt that no work has been done there (at Shihningow) for some thirty years, antho natives got held up by coming on water and when I went oror there with Mr. Wilkinson last autumn, there was no sign of anybody working in the neighbourhood, Now, since We put in an applisation to open there, a few men hava began to soralch at two old sdits and we are met with the objection that a company was formed thres years ago to work coal there."
Now, Gentlemon, this a ches of further definite and distinct obstruction on the part of the Chinese, while the Taotai we have, beon informed by wire, will not set, on the pretext of popalat disturbances. This last action of the Chinese authorities is ons in which we must same a firm attitude, as it is in distinct violation of one concession doad and such prelext is untenable. Our total out standing inearances as at the 31st March amounted to upwards of Tis. 22,000,000, a record which, as I have liave already pointed out, is; for a company 10 years in existence, almost unique in the sazals of life insuranen in moving the adoption companies. It is worthy of note that this income is within Tls. 6,000 of this entire ordinary revenue from all sources of the International Settlement of Shanghai, which, according to the Municipal Report for the past year, was Ila. 1,983,432. I have to announce that since the date of the last annual mesting Tory important legislation has been enacted by the Hongkong Government affecting all in surance companies organized under Hongkong ordinances. The generel effect of the new legislation is to secure a very complete return for official publication of the affairs of each company, and to require a deposit of approved securities of not less than $200,000. The com pany has complied with the requirements of the new law, having submitted the required stale mente, and depcaited scourities to the extent of Tis. 200,000, which is over $60,000 in excess of the necessary amount.
