MONEY ORDER B.

11 Although exchange ruled high during the year, the issue of money orders han deoreased, while, on the other hand, the payment has largely increased. The fact of the Increase of the imue of orders on Japan is owing to Hong Long being the intermediary for the exchange of money orders between Australia and India and the other British Possessions in the Esst with Japan. About £1,000 of the increase in the sale of Imperial Postal Orders is accounted for by the establishment of another agency at Tientsin.

Remittazons to the Colony by the means of Imperial Postal Orders have become more popular and are yearly increasing in volume, The extuction in the amount of commission on Local Posial Notes from 2 per cent to 1 per cent effected in 1905 has resulted in the marked incressed use of this means of remitting money 822,577 in 1967 against $12,723 and $15,497 in 1905 and 1606 respectively,

13 The exchange of money orders with Macao hitherto between Hongkong and Mano only, has been extended tg all the Britist Agencies established in China, Direct exchange with Kiantschou also came into force in 1907,

14 à system of advice of payment of money orders, to the remitter by the paying offles at a fee of 10 cents for each crder, was introduced, bat the public has not availed itself of this in novation:

POSTAL HONG LICENCES,

20 Thirty-eight postal hong licences and 120- licences to letter carriers were issued daring the year. These numbers show a daoreans of 6 hong Heenoes and 36 letter carrier Reences. The decrease is due to the increased rate of postage on bong packets to and from Canton which was raised to 4 cents per half ounce. The horge ara still in the babit of smuggling their letters on board steamers, instead of sending them through the Post Office for transmission. An appreci able increase in the number of bong packets rrosived by the Post Ofoe for transmission to Shanghai was due to one of these hougs being caught smuggling and fined $200 by the Police Magistrato and having its licence cancelled.

Undor Bandmaster Coke they went through a very interesting programme in a very attractive manner and the dusky musisipas earned many compliments in the course of the afternoon.
