A SINGAPORE COMMENT. Referring to the recent discussion in Japan on the legality of marriages in Anglicu churches which are not registered at the Con- salate, the Singapore Free Prere bad the -following in the course of a loading-actinle-on- The subject
"The situation is a peculiarly interesting one, but the couples who have been marrie Lin I'good faith in church in Japan need hara að fear that so oversight in which they have ao responsibility will not be soon formally regulated. The English community of this Colony (Straits Settlement) want through the same experience here about seventeen years
when it was discovered that ago
a grava doubt existed as to the validity of all marriage celebrated in the Anglican churches of this Colony since the year 1880, when Bishop Chambers, of Labuan, resigned offles. Now the Indian Marriage Act 1865 was that under which marriages were celebrated in this Colony, and at the separation of the Colooy from India in 1867 the powers vested in Bishop Chambers were by Letters Patent continued to him and his suo cessors in the office of Bishop of Labuau, to which diocese the Colony was annexed. But when Bishop Chambora resigned no successor was appointed to the see of Labusa. Bishop Hose who usted for a time as Bi-hop Chamber's surrogate in Singapore, was subsequently appointed Bishop of Sarawak and Singapore, but it was not notiosd till 1891 that the Letters Patent for the Diocese of Labann did not apply to the newer diocese filled by Bishop Hose. The doubt did not apply by marriages by bsuna, hit to marriages by: licence, the authority to licanes mamaining wit i the vacated wee of Labuse. There was iu some cireles a good deal of monsteraktion, but the people affected in the main too things very philosophically, and a validating Ordinance was parsed early in 1892 entitled the "Marzinge Validation Ordinance, whose full fitle read. An Ordinance to remove doubts as to the validity of certain Marriages solomnised in the Colony by Clergymen of the Church of England without previous publication of Bauns." Soially the situation afforded no little amuse- ment and ramour lias it that one lading |_lady_war_inntating on her husband marry
