Does Residence Abroad tend to Deterioration of

the Hair?

It is a remarkable and singular fast; that in nins casas out of ten those whose lives have been spent in the Colonies sufferin a very evident manner from various forms of hair degeneration. Compare the average head of hair of the Colonist with that of the dweller in the British Isles, and you will find that bald beads are more prevalent, grey hair more abundant, and also that the scalp exhibits, various degrees of hair deterioration rarely met with in the home country.

THE PUNKAH-WALLAH.

THREATENED OCCUPATION. Whoever has travelled in India or the East bringe home with him thankful memories of the pankah, and of the cooling steams of six, which it creatas There is always, too, a recollection of the darkskinned pankah-wallah, the native whose task it is to pull backwards and forwards the swaying curtain so essential to comfort in hot climates. As one watcher these man squat- ting on their haunches and listlessly jking the ropes, the idea arises that here must be the most monotonous form of all human lab ur. Monotonous, indeed, it is Beyond the Bitle twist of the wrist which the pankeb-vallah gives at the opportune moment, there is prasti- cally no variation of the stroke. They say, indeed, that the punkah-wallah often goes to alerp, yet so meotanical is bis occupation, that he still continues to move the swaying outtain while bimself looked soundly in the arms of Morpheus.

It will be news to travellers that, at length, the occupation of the panksb-wallah seem doomed. After innumerable and fruitless at tempta to produce a really satisfactory mechani cal punkab, there is rosson to believe that success his at Inst been achieved, and that the grateful, swaying cartala, which for centuries. has depanded upon buman manipulation, will in fetare be automatically regulated. This mast in time mean thedisestablishment of the paakib wallab. His

type

of labour is of the nature of a family accomplishment: Thusa punkab-wallah will be almost certain to be the son of apuakah wallah, and his sons in tarn will aim at no higher or more exciting form of employment. The occupation has been threatened for years past. Much inventive skill is bean spplied to lis overthrow, but previous effects have hitherto failed, chiefly in one very essential detail. Somehow they have not been able to put into the swing of the panked the "kick," which la of all things, necessary. Until recently no mechanical means could be devised to as ure the *kick" which the pankah-wallah gives by a sharp twist of his wrist

The importance of this little kick "is difioult to overestimate. It creates just that Ittle preliminary disturbance of the atmo sphere without which the regular swaying of the runkah would be comparatively ineffectire. It is this "kick" which has hitherto saved the puokah-allah-not that he always gave it on both the backward and forward swings. Threat and Lungs

Wordsly House, Stonnall, near Walsalt. Dear Sirs,My doctor ordered me 5 take Angier's Emulsion for dyspepsia and nervous affections, and I am very pleased to say that it has done-me an-immense-amount of good. I have been i!! for two years, but I feel I am getting stronger every day-less- indigestion, eating better, and sleeping better. My bowels used to be very much constipated, but since began taking Angier's Emulsion they have been acting regularly every morning I like the Emulsion so much that I feel I cannot take enough of it, and' often wish the doctor would order a tablespoonful instead of a dessertspoonful. I can highly recommend Augier's Emulsion as a very good tonic for anybody who is run-down.

(Signed) (Mrs.) M. LEWIS. THE MOST PALATABLE OF ALL EMULSIONS, AND A GREAT AID TO DIGESTION. The writer of the above letter directs attention to several of the strong points in favour of Angler's Emulsión. She finds that it is really pleasant to take, that it makes her cat better, digest betier, sleep better, and that t promotes a normal, healthy action of the bowels. Moreover, she is taking it on the advice of her doctor. Angier's Emulsion is invaluable for Jung aflections, digestive disorders, wasting diseases and for bilding up after illness.
