· CHINESE POSTAL AFFAIRS.
:
It is unfortunate that the earlier telegraphio account should have misrepresented the sefion of the Chinese authorities in reminding the foreign Post Offices In Tiontein of their obliga- tion to send all mail matter for dispatch by rafi through the Chinese Imperial Post Office, For what at first appeared an unnecessary step in the light of existing conditions has long since resolved itself into a perfectly justifiable insistenco upon the recognized prerogatives of this Post Office. In Ağ'il 1903 a convention was drawn up prescribing the terms upon to be carried by railway companies in China. Article I of this document stipulated that

GOVERNMENT TROPERTY. Bix matiyes appeared before the Court charged with removing stones from Crowe land, and each of the defendanta was ordered to pay a fine of 850.
FILATES AGAIN.
Inspector Dymond received a report at the Aberdeen Station that a piracy had taken place on the 14th instant about fear miles outside Lama Island, in Chinese waters, a fishing boat owner being the victim. This port must have been a good fishing. ground, for five days later the man whoea oraft was pixated returned to the some waters. He had scarcely thrown bis net out when, the pirates again made their appear, ance, relieved him of what little money he had and departed with his oare.. Eventually the suforianate faherman found his way back to Aberdeen, and in consequence of bis report Inspector Dymond prid & enrprise visit to a house on Loma Island, arrested four men and ancceeded in recovering most of the stolen property. The men were charged before bis Worship and the enes remanded.
ALLEGED POISONING.
A female named Lam Kiu was placed in the dock on suspicion of feloniouely and maliciously administering a certain poison or poisons to one, Chan Fuk, on the 17th instant, and the case was remanded. It appears that the woman was deceased's 'oncubine, and on the day in question, when he was suffering from a violent stomach ache she gave him the fatal draught to ease bis pain. He died two hours afterwards. The defendant was arrested later, and being unwell was taken to the Government Ciril Hospital, a constable keing, despatched to guard bor. While in her room, end while the amah's back was turned, she jumped, through the window and attempted to make her escape. A obase followed and abe was soon captured, His Wornbir, on bearing this, remarked that there should be a proper room at the hospital in which to contine prisoners.
BEFORE MR. C. D. MELBOURNE (SECOND
POLICE MAGISTÉATE),
A BOGUE AND TAGABONDI Bergernt Appleton placed a native before the Court who was arrested at Taumați with a Dumber of counterfeit coins and two akeloton keys in his possession. He was sentenced to nix weeks' imprisonment and firo hours' stooks.
·AN 'UNDESIRABLE IMPORTATION,
As a Chinese gentleman was walking along the street at Shektontrui on Tuesday is arms were suddenly platoned from bebind by a native, while another cut his pocket-open-and reloved him of his purse containing some small monry. The pair then made good their escape, the viotim immediately reported the matter at the West Point Police Station, and shortly after wards one of the men was arrested. At the station he admitted taking part in the robbery, and gave the name of his accomplier, bat in the Court he told his Worship that the polis nearly killed him and therefore be had to admit.
His Worship-Can you show any marks of violanca?
Defendant said he could; and pulled off bis jacket, but on examination by the Court none were visible. Defendant then admitted that he had been in the Colony only sight days. He had no work to do, bad, no fixed place of abode, and slept during his stay here in brothels or opiam divans.
His Worship sent him to hard labour for six weeks, and ordered his exposure in the stocks for four hours.

Here the curtain dropped, rising shortly afterwards on a Hongkong bachelors mess, which afforded the spectators fifteen. minutes of real amusement. Up-to-date jokes ware fred off, the chit was worked in and even the Shanghai cricketers. But with all their joking the mes paid the visitors a very pretty compliment, toasting than before the crowded house which cheered and cheored again,

The record part of the programme opened with sword dance by Lieut. Fraser, RA.M.C., who stepped to the piping of Mr R. Munro. The anditons were to delighted with the performance that a return was demanded. and then the dancer gave the Fighland Fling, The seprauu solo "Angels guard Theo" was gang sweetly by Mr. F. VISITING CARDS;
The Courrier de Tientsin" publishes the following interesting anecdote on "H.E. Chaug Chih-lung, who is, as will be remembered, in obargs of the reform work,
According to Chinese custom, intending visitors to high dignitaries have to send in their names written in the smallest possible characters on large red cards.
A few days ago some Chinese students recently returned from Japan called on H.E. Chang Chih-tung. At the gate they handed the sur- vanta small European cards with their names on one side in English and on the other in Chinese. The latter characters filled nearly the whole of the visiting oard. When the cards were banded to H.E. Chang he first believed that some foreigners wished to see him, but when told that the sacrilegous cards came from. Chinese students he became enraged sod expressed his opinion of the marked disrespect of the students in the strongest terms,

The students were not a little surprised the cards were returned to them with the neces sary explanation. Part of the young men took to their heels, but some of them remained and wrote their names with almost invisible charno. ters on large sheets of paper. What occurred afterwards is not knowe.
