Mr. Stevenson admitted that paragraph woa pablished with his knowledge and consent, but explained that it was not an engagement, it was a provisional arrangement, contingent to an engagement on the 'naus! terms,
An official of the Shanghai Club told him they could not give him any guarantee; he could play at bis own riek, taking what be could get; and he said in that case he would not dream of tonching a cus. They parted with a friendly handshake, without misunderstanding, and certainly, Mr. Stevenson affirms, without any "huffp" fooling on Lis part.

Ben Fell rald he was in the Consulate of the United States at Chefoo during the month of Angast. He knew the prisoner at the bar by the name of W, H. Adsetts. On August 13th witness saw the prisoner at Chefoo when he was arrosted. He was searched a few minutes after entering the Consulate, and witness saw various articles taken from his person. The manicure set produced was taken from a bag. The name Gertrude was angraved- on sach article except one. The other articles of jewellery found on prisoner's person were also identified by witness. The articles taken from accused were mostly found in his trousers pockets. He mid nothing while the search was being effected.
