In the case of the Hip On Marine Insurance Company, Ltd. against the Hang On Marinu Kusurance Company, his Honour dolivored judgment as follows:

The plaintiff Co. having paid an insurance claim which they had re-insured with the dofondant Co., bring this sation to recever the amount so paid. CHALMERS, LL.D. Seventh Edition. Revisod and enlarged, by T. K, Dealy Queen's College, Hongkong Kelly and Waleh Ltd. 1907. An English and Cantonese Dictionary for the use of those who wish to learn the spoken language of the Canton provinces, was first published by Ir. then Mr. Chalmers of the London Mission in 1872. For thirty-five years the work has been in its own sphere, one of the mest, highly approved side to the acquisition of Cantonese by the non-Chinese student. The aiz editions were called for daring the author's life-time is convincing testimeny to the value of the book. This weight of evidence is rather onhanced than lessened by the fact that the constituency, to which an English-Cantonese dictionary op peale, is strictly limited.

the whole, I have come to the opinion that the evidenes as to the facilities for storing cargo late at night is not so strong as to indu's me to say it was the consig noe's duty to do this. He could have obtained a police permit, I have no doubt, without much dificulty: but I am not clear that he could have founda godown willing to keep open all night to taka bis angar: be cortainly could not have got the Hongkong and Kowloon Godown Co, to do so as he was not a regular customer. It is clear however that when there in night work some godown koopers will keep open it reasonable notice is given: Messrs Buttarfeld & Swire's godown keeper said that It is nearly eight years since the death of Dr. their godowns are open up to midnight about Chalmers; and there was issued last week a 10 times a month. The main question of law which has to be decided is whotbor the policy risk of craft from the ship to the shore, But on the facts I have narrated them

A proliminary question arises which may ronder the determination of the legal question aunecessary. It was said that there was delay in unloading: such a delay as was not contemplated in the policy. The case was put. in this way-that there was an implied condition in the contract that the goods should remain on board the ship in harbour for a reasonable time only and that the consigues's earge boatman did not act reasonably in not landing the sugar which he had on board bis boat after midnight. I agree as to the implied condition, and also with the general proposition that delay is equivalent to deviation; but with regard to this I think that none of the ongas referred to in Arnould refer to se small a matter as the delay of a few days, but rather to such delays as might in strictness be comparable with deviations from the voyage. Rowever, whether the authorities include such a case of Jolay as is suggested to have occurred in the present case, or not, I feel sure that it is cover- ed by principle, sul if proved, that it would roliers the under-writers; subject however to this, that should I died the delay unreasonable, there would then come the further question whether the consignee is responsible for a delay which was manifestly the fault of the ship.

The determination of the question of foot baa given me much difficulty and has delayed my giving judgment. In the first place it cannot be denied that the unloading of the "Tholms"

The Golfer's Manual, by Mexsutra BUTLER London: T. Werner Laurio.

To the ordinary individual there is something weird and cocentrist about the golfer. That a man chasing the elusive gutta perchs through bushes shoul ́d spend hours rying to "hit a woe be;"

and whine, muttering curses when he doesn't. and it and wearing most terribly when he fooles-that a man should do all this and he considered of a formal temperament is one of the anomalies of the present day. And yet golf has become fashionable. In certain circles it is a habit to talk of patties, drivers, dormy, bankers, divots, tees, and so on, and man who occupy high positions in the realm are not above playing golf. Even Dr. Macna- mara indulges in what the Scotch call "the royal and ancient game," and he has given Lis approbation, in a brightly written introduo- tion to, The Golfer's Manual', Mr. Buller is certainly deserving of commendation.

His manual is readable to the layman, but to the tyro in golf, it must be a treasure. He dis- coureen ou the game in a most attractive manner and the information which he supplies is well worth the pries of the book (2/6) to the golfer.

- The English ín (A) is the same as the English in (B) but the Chinees in (A) differs from the Chinete in (C). The clause is question as to risk of craft is in the English of (A) and (B). The Chimpso form of (A) contains this clause “All insurance matters will entirely be carried out and dealt with according to the rules and regulations in the form of our Company's English insurance policy. These rules and regulationt are treated as contained in this policy. This is proof." Therefore the risk of craft clause is in corporated in the Chinese form of (A),

The expression Rules and Regulations in both places in this sentence is the translation of the Chinese "Kwai tiu.”

The Chinese form (C) contains the following clause "All Insurance matters will be carried out and doalt with according to the western laws relating to insurancs rales and regulations." Some controversy Aros as to whether this was the correct trauslation, and Mr. Wong the Court translator was examined at length on the subject, The question turns on the meaning of Lai' and 'Kwai tìu,' Mr. Wong admitted that Tin' means classification of regulations in
