A FINE ARTEE.
April 5th.
An ideal Easter has been our pertion this year the Brat time in my recollection, despite the early date on which the festival fell. So fine was it that London was practically emptied, while seaside resorts began their season with a bumper holiday period.
HOKOKONG'S CORONATION STATUES.
I spent a very pleasant bour in Easter wook in the studio cf Mr. George E. Wade, the eminent sculptor. It was in connection with the commission he has in hand from the Coronation Committee 16 complete a status of Queen Alexandra for Hongkong that I went to see him, bat incidentally I was interested to find specimen models of Mr. Wade's work re presenting contributions to the art treasures of almost overy part of the work. India has Bumerous specimens in Allahabad, Bombay and elsewhern: Sorth Africa has others, oluding a symbolical group to celebrate the cunclusion of Peace which has been declared be the firest piece of art in our South African Colonias, Canada has a state at Montreal Chicage a drinking fountain of poculiarly effective yet simple outline; the Peris Saloon has braught to his exhibits the warmest. commardation; and the houses of the great in England, to say nothing of the Mansion "ouse itself, are enriched by the results of bis genius, j The statue of Queen Alexandra is alrealty completed. Har Majesty gare sittings last July and the model has been ready for some time, but the culptor is waiting for a visit from the Quest hefors the statues Gnished in hrane. The figure is nine fest in height, and stands with a truly regal appearance or a pedestal. In her coronation robes, and wearing her crown and soeptre, ber Majesty is a lifelike and dignit figure, and the portraiture is extremely clever. I deed the cxcellence of the portraits in all the figures I saw in the studio tess to the great obility Wade has for his work. He has the art of lxing upon the charac teristics of his subject's explosion, and after that the technicalities fellow naturally. The Quens, and indeed all the Boyal Family, te has found most admirable sitters, with every con- sideration for the sculptur and his requirements.
