The life history of the common e, just completed by Dr. Johe. Schmidt, is mentioned as one of the most fascinating arer worked Dat by the naturalist. The spawning ground for Europa proves to be the Atlantic where thin depth is about 500 fathoms along the coust from Norway to Spain, and to this deep seu ragins the rels make a long journey from the inland fresh waters of the Continent, Here the females deposit their eggs, which gradually develop into dep-ribana-shaped larvae (Lep tocephalus brevicostris. The railway accident at Salisbury, Eng., in which a train at high speed was throwa fren the track on a curve, has lod to much discussion concerning the conditions necessary for safe runcing on curves. The tracks are specially banked to prevent derailing, and the cause of wrecks seems to be failure of the tracks, to guide the engine. This, it is shown does not depend upon the truck itself. An old engineer points out that certain trains which had a babit of leaving the track où a dowe bill curro were braked mostly by the engine, anaing the cars to bump against it, id. & the draw.har between engine and tender was lower than the axle of the trucks, the rear end of the engine was depressed and the forward end rais. The ccaditions are now reversed. With emergency brakes, the braking is mostly done by the train hut, as the draw-bar is now higher than the axle of the trucks, the forward end of the engine is raised by the pulling back of
