HONGKONG'S NEW BISHOP.

THE REV. CANON LANDER

Canou Lander is the son of Mr. J. G. H. Landur, of Bishop Oesley Manor, Staffordshire. He was born in 1801, and received his educational training for the ministry at Trinity College and Ridley Hall, Cambridge. In 1884 he was ordained by the late Bishop Ryle to the curacy of St. Bride's, Liverpool, and four years later was appointed ricar of St. Benedict's, Evertor. It was here that he found scope for the exercise of that "warm-hearted zeal and activity which have all along characterised his work in Liverpool, and endeared him to the hearts of his parishioners, says the Liverpool Courier, Hin grost and abiding in torost in education led to the building of new schoole there, sed be did much to stimulate and develop the life of the shazoh in this part of the city. Arrivar of St. Philip's, Litherland, which position he took up in 1800, Canon Lander was able to do a great deal in the way of church extension amongst a rapidly. growing population. The needs of the district booama very pressing and the task which he set himself to perform, was a heavy one. How he mucneeded in his endeavour to meet the require maul for more commodation is well known. To his energy was larg›iy dus the erection of two misalon halls, and he had mack to do with the building of the now Church of St. Andrew, the while his educational propensities found an outlet on the Litherland School Board, of which he was chairman. It 1964 Canon Lauder was appointed to the bonorary canoury of Liverpool, and in the following your he succeeded Canon Hodgins as visar of St. Cyprian's, Edgebilt. Here bis broad sympathies, his eloquent pranching, and bis qualities as u kind friend and wise-coun sellor have been appreciated to the full, and the congratulations which are being showered upon him in regard to his new appointment ure zaingled with a sincere regret at his severoaco. from the parish. Amongst other preïtions which Canon Loader has filled with distinction are bon. chaplain to the Liverpool Lay Readers and accrotary to the local auxiliary of the Charck Missionary Society, and secretary to the Liverpool Cathedral Chapter,

Canon Landor has been twien married, bis first wife, who died in 1902, being formerly Mies Fletcher, daughter of Mr. J. P. Flataber, of The Grange,, Edgo-lane. The prosont Mrs. Lander, to whom he was married last year, is the dang hator of Mr. H "Crawford Smith, er.M.P. for Tyneside.

I had an interview with the secretary of the Yost Han Railway Company yesterday and asked him a series of six questions which I append herewith with his anaweza :-

(1) What is the point on which the share- holders of the Yust Han Railway Company differ?

This was how the dispute originated; The time limited for the payment of the diret culi of 20 per cent, on the Company's shares expired at the end of the 5th moon last year (Chinese). Messrs. GERMAN SHIPPING German shipping and commercial circles are in a fever of delight at the extraordinary pro- gress which their over-un shipping has beani recently making. A few years wore of auch progress, they say, and the maritime sapremazy of Britain will begin to be called in question. Take, for example, the Snez Caual. In 1882 British shipping through the Canal was otur four million tons; in 1906 36 had rimn to sight i and a half millions, or a tride over 100 par cent. inereuse. In 182 Gorman shipping was 127,030 toos, la 1906, two sod a quarter millions, en Sporense of about 1,700 per cent. p 1982 England owned 81 per cent. of all shipping passing through the canal, in 1906 the per- centage had sunk to 63. In 1882 Germany i owned only 2 per cent,, but in 196 this had risen to over 16 percent. Equal jubin. tion has been caused by figure recently published by the Norddeutscher Lloyd and the Hamburg. America lines, with regard to the enormou increase of their toausge, which is now far in excess of that of any British rival, and is rapidly increasing. Their lines to India, China, the Straits Settle, ments, and Japan are some of their most fourish ing ventures, and it now has been decided put un steamers to trade with ports in the Persian Gulf, German caplains not being abore calling at any port, no matter how insignificant.
