REVIEWS.

ΒΙΒΜΙΝΟΣΛΗ Hyacinth, by GEORE A.

London: Edward Arnold. Hongkong; W. Brower and Co.

This is a tale of Ireland, of her people, politics, patriots, and politicians, by the author of "The Seething Fat", one of the cleverest and most humoursome booke of last season. Hyacinth in characterised by many of the charming qualities of The Seething Pot", but as a tale we do not like it quite so well. "Hyacinth" is a young Celt whose reining and education help us to relise how many n misguided Fenian may be maile. His marriage and awakening from the ideals and long, long dreams of youth are typical of an everyday tragedy-or comedy, recording to the age Bud temporanient of the observor. It is a haman book, written with sympathy and insight.

The Halance: a Tale e' Burman Superstition. by ARTHUR EGGAR. London: John Murray Hongkong: Kelly & Walsh, Ltd. This is a rofresting tale, striking a different note to the run of this season's fiction, and has enfcient mystery and adventure to make the reader finish it in one sitting. In addition, it shows the anthor's intimate knowledge of the We hope Burusso, their ways and customs. there are in real life no human jackals like the pseudo-missionary who in this narrativo preys on the simple Burmans, and meets such a shocking end.

Whatsoever a Man Soweth, by WILLIAM La

QUEUI. London: George Bell & Bon. The demise of this popular author seems to warrant our overlooking the little innoturscios of which he was habitually guilty, and so far as literary standards go, he always had his own. No other mystery-maker has ever put together quite the same melange of crime, adventure, detective miracles, and other seunstions, which make this book a type of his general output, This posthumous publication will not in any way diminish the laurels previously earned by the author.

A special cablegram to the Cablenars says that Stanford University was destroyed. BUIT FOR ALIMONY.

A Chinese lady from Yeamati sued her hus band for alimoDY.

Mr. E. J. Grist (of Messrs. Wilkinson and Grist) appeared for the complainant, and Mr, Otto Kong Sing represented the defendant.

Mr. Grist said they were practically agreed as to the facts. The defendant was willing to suppare his wife, but she refused to live in bis house becanys he kept a concubine who was mistress, whereas bis wife waaidered she should

be mistress.

Mr. Kong Sing said the defendant knew very well her husband kept a concubine before she married, him. He married her on a certain day and was onlled away to Canton on that day, When he arrived home three days later hiite had left the house and refused to return.

Mr. Grist -Is it likely who would. She was "fed up" of waiting (laughter). You don't expect a woman to wait for a man who runs! away from hor to bis concubine before he is married a day. She will live with the defendant if he will "fire" the concubine or set up a Meparato establishment for her.

His Worship-I don't think he will do that she is rather elderly (laughter).

Mr. Koag Bing-I don't think you can say it was desertion to leave her for three days, Is it likely that defendsal got married just to run away from her?

Mr. Grist--The defendant left her on the same day as they were married.

Complainant, ia reply to the Magistrats, said ha understood that one short blast signified go. ing to starboard, He did not go to starboard on this occasion, as he merely intended to indicate his presence to the Wing Fuk. He was well clear of the steamer before he saw the launch for the first time, Both launches had their lights lie played at the time. Whon first he observed the Wing Fuk he saw about three of her lights, When next he saw her the green light only was in view. Had she obeyed the rule of the road there would live been ample room for the Wing Fux to bare turned to starboard

Defendant, in reply to the Magistrate, said he heard the short blast and took it to menu that the police pinnace was going straight on. The meaning of one short blast is to go straight ahead. He passed the anchored steamer's bow by some ten yards and then was so bear the police pinnace that there was not time to go
