BATTLECH IFN AND MORE CLUIBERS-
A Times telegram dated Berlin, March 6th, says:--In the course of the debate in the Budgat Committee of the Richstag to-day on the new Navy Bill, Admiral von Tirpita, Secretary of Slate for the Imperial Marine, defended the demands of the Government for eit large cruisare and for increasing the displacement of future battleships to 1800 tons. With regard to the croisers, he maintained that they were necessary in consequence of the shipbuilding programmes of other congtries ned of the obligation which develred upon the uary The to protect Germin foreign commeros. Germau

In time of war swift eruisaga ch service in distant parts of the world could divert foreiga cruisers from an attack upon the German coasts, while in home waters a squadron of armoured craisers would, according to the exportsuce of the lust war. render effective expport to the fighting dest. In the course of some farther remarks ha explained that in actual warfare the pary must try to protect the mercantile marine by indirect methods. In the case of small cruisers their. chiof advantage would lie in their numbors, and moreover they were the best defence against torpedo boats."

The leader of the Clerical Ceutre, Dr. Spaho, declared that the Navy Bill had the desirable object of making it necessary for any foreign Power to think twice about attacking Germany and shout the pinces where it would attuck her. The provisions of the Bill, including this year's estimates for laying down two battleships of 18,000 tons and one large orniser of 15,000 tans, were then carried against the rates of the Social Democrats. The figures as to the extent and popula- tion of the Empire are of course astonishing Figures always are. But these bring their surprises points of detail.
