Purporting to have found a $30 bill they wished her to got ebanged for them, and when she had consented they demanded that she should leave some of har jewellery as security, meanwhile they had substituted a piece of paper for the bill. Yesterday at about 3 p.m. a junk fully loaded with kerosene was sailing past near the Yan Lau-moon in the southern district. A member of the crew who carelessly throw a mutol after lighting a cigarette set fire to the cargo. Quite a panic ensued, as there were many cargo-boats in the neighbourhood and the jauk was drifting towards them. The jauk and its cargo burnt to the water. The other boats aged to keep clear of-the barning craft.

Vernon & Smyth sny in their weekly. share report, dated Hongkong, April 6th - The improvement reported in our laat has con- tinued, and a fair business has been transacteil, while rates have maintained and in many as improved their position. Many of our chiof stocks, which bare practically boon dormant for some time. have been again dealt in, and incipient farther improvement in the market in quite noticeable at the time of closing.

BANKS.-Hongkong and Shanghais, with an improvement in the London rate to £90, have ruled firmer and a fair number of shares have changed hands at 8860. the market elesing steady at that rata. A fair or ber of local sales have been put through, sut veral aai lots have been purchased for Sangbui see ant Nationala continue in demand at, but shares remain very scaroo; it is doubtful, however, whether buyers would spring the rate it any shares were forthcoming.

MARINE INSURANCES-Unions have ruled quiet with small sellers at 8790, and we hare no les to report.
