The total mercantile tonnage reported from the United States shows an increases of over 66,000 tons on that of the previous year, which accounts for 581 per cent. of the total increas in the colonial and foreign output for 1905. The most noticeable feature in the output for the United States is the enormous increase which has taken place in the tonnage built for service on the Crest Lakos, which from an average of 15,900 tons for the years 1901-3, had fallen to 49,000 tons in 1904, and has now reached the record total of over 195,000 tons. This tofal includes no love than 20 steamers of over 6,000 tons grass, whilst it may be men- tioned that only 3 sea-going steel stesters (of between 2,000 and 3000 tons) were launched on the coast. The warship tonge launched in the United States during 1905, amounts to about 94,000 tons displacement, and with the axemption of 1904, is the highest total ever Iaunched in that country.
