JOINT STOCK SHARES, Messrs. Vernon & Smyth say in their weekly share repost dated Hongkong February "ded:--- With the axcoption of Marines, and a few other atacks which have ruled firm, we have to report an almost general tendency to weakness in rates during the work under review. The continued persistent firmness in sterling exchange against general anticipations, and the couserment in- Jucement to realize silver securities is quite sufficient to necount for this, and if it were not that our locsi enncoros are in nearly every cas deiug wall, the declina in rates must necessarily have been very much more recontuated than it i's.

asin points of a rubber estate wore that it should base coitable oil-that-the-rom munications should be as good na possible, and that there should be the best management. Aa regarded the company's estates, the soil was certainly very suitable to the growth of rubbor and the communications were excellent-the railway going to every one of them, as far as ho remembered; while in Mr. McGregor he bolinred that they had a very capable and
orgulic manager. Their manager estimated that he was likely to produce this year between 48,000lbs. and 53,000lbs, of rubber, bind himself any way but he did not in to this exliaty. He (the speaker) would not wivise the shareholders to rely upon getting this quantity: he merely told them woped to produce, and if he produced even the their maunger on the spot stated that he lower estimate it would be more than the direc tors had anticipated. Mr. McGrogar informed them, in regard to developments, that he could bring under cultivation another 700 news by June next and the lourd hoped that he would be able to plant during the year altogether as much as 1,000 acres. If he were able to do, this the estates at the end of the year would bavo Mr. about 2,700 acres under cultivation. Arthur Lampard, one of the directors, was going to the East at the end of this month, sud he would visit all the estates and have the opportunity of consulting with Mr. McGregor. The board expected that the enterprise would derive great benelit from Mr. Lampard's visit, and when he returned they would be in a better deal with the affairs of the company position and to do the best they could with the property, In reply to questions the chairman stated that the properties were transferred to the company on November last, and the produes which came off the estates before that time belonged to He was not ia Mr. Rook- the previous owners. feller's confidence and he could gira no feformal tion about the new process which was aid to have been devised by that gentleman for revolutionizing rabber. When an ostzle bed been brought to the point of yielding, the cost of producing rubber would thereafter probably bo akout la. a lb. With regard to the question whether there was any other source of zevonne besides rubber, he had intended to mention hat the manager also estimated that he would be able to prodaes this your about 2,000 cwt. of coffee. The age at which the trees should be topped for rubber would, le imagined, bo left by the directors for the decision of the manager, who was a planter and would know best the time to login tapping. He noticed, however, that the anger in his report said that he expected to oktan about 10,000lb of rubber from some trees which were from five to six years old. AMERICAN ANTICIPATIONS.
OF WAR WITH CHINA.
Washington, February 16.-It is known here that God Wood has asked the War Department for authority to go to China, in case an expedition to that country becomes necessary. It is understood that the permission requested will be granted.
The dispatches of the last few days leave little rooni for doubt Laut the crisis which 'the United States is now facing in the yellow empire in the most serious that has arisen in our foreign relations for some time. There is little doubt that the authorities at Washington realiza the fall significance of the information sent out by the agents of the United States government in Peking and other points of the empire. In view of this it is more than probable that the War Department will accede to the request of General Wood It is known that the President has unbounded confidence is General Wood, and regards him as the man of all men for difficult situations. This confidence is also shared by the members of the Cabinet, particularly by the Secretary of War.-Cablenews.
