Mr. Brown has been engaged in business in Shanghai and Tientsin for several years, but going through France he deserted the train, called at the White House to tell the President what he knows about the hajcutt Hawas.. accompanied by Senator Fullon, of Oregon. Mr. Brown threw Considerable light on the business of Americans in China.
Despite the ban of American goods, Mr. Brown assured the President that the business of American firms in the Celestial Empire is increasing your by year and this year it will ba fully 20 per ceat, heavier than any previous your. Fight steamship lines are busy in the commerce between American and Chinese ports, he said, whereas twelve years ago two lines found it insufficient to keep their ships busy.
An American court in Shanghai, with judge, marshal, and clerk, to adjudicate cases now handled in consular courts, was recommended by the visitor, as the Chinese have ne confidence în cousular courts,
Sauator Fulton has became particularly interested in the situation, and he intends to introduce a bill to make the remedies suggested. Mr. Brown suggested to the President that it probably would not be wise for this Govora. ment to show any signs of weeking in its stand on the Chinese xetasion law because of the boycott, as if it did, the, Chinese in Canton, from which the immigrants to this country principally come, would resort to the boycott whenever any action of this country did not please them.
