POLICE COURT.

Friday, 15th December.

BEFORE MH. F. A. HAZELAND (FIRST POLICE MAGISTRATE),

THE JUDGE'S COOLIE.

A coelio employed by Mr. Justice Wise was charged by the Indian watchmen at the Peak Tram Station with assault. Mr. Grist appeared to conduct the coolie's defence. Apparently the defendant had attempted to board a car which had its full complement of passengers, and the watchman prevented him. The latter said the sooliestruck him, but the defendant and he was dragged by the watchman with unnecessary violence but did not strike the complainant. Mr. Grist cubmitted that the watchraau had been rather rough in his treatment of the coolie

and dismissed the summons.

Our Cantonese failow-residents have, we are informed, a separato ground of complaint; one of the prisoners in question is alleged to be the widow of au official in Szecknen, being horself * Cantonese, and the girls alleged to be kid. happed are stated to be slave girls such an overy official has in bis household, openly honght from their parents or guarditis. It is stated that the prisoner has in her baggage papers justifying the presence of the chi proper pas and that the police did not give her time to produce these papers; but it was procisely for this purpose that she was romanded. Mach was made at the meeting of the Cautonese of the insult to which a lady of rank was subjected bat it will be noted that the Chinose magistrate himself proposed to remand bar to the Mixed Court cells. If there was no foundation for the charge of kidnapping, the lady's innoceues would have been ascertained when the case was hard again on Saturday.

There is, however, every reason to believe that the dispate on Friday was a premeditated incident in the plau to attack foreign rights in The Settlement, and is necessary that a firm sland should be made for these rights. It is to bo regretted even more by the Chinese than by their foreign friends that the youth and hot- hebtedness of the Brothers King should have led them so forget themselves as they did on Friday. As for Mr. Kaan, he was doubtless soting under the orders of his superiors, and we are glad to know that a strong remonstrance has already been addressed to the Trotai.

AN INDIGNATION ¿MEETING, was called ha Dec. 9 by the Committes of the Chinese Chamber of Commeres to protest against the souduct of the Police in striking runners of the Mized Court during the session of the Court. Over a thousand are computed to have attended the meeting, during which it was decided, amongst other things, to dewand the dismisal of the police inspectors, datretives and constables concerned and to ask that an- other person be appointed to not as British Dosessor. A great deal of indignation was manifested by everyone prosent among the

able unanimity as to what stops should be taken to preserve "the face" of the Chinese official who are claimed to have been insulted by the police.
