In answer to these letters, the commanding officer issued a proclamation on tas 9th or 10th of November, stating that the men's demands had been wired to St. Petersburg, and that no change could be effected until he had received Buthority to do so. Whes darkness came we were not allowed to have a light, for fear of attracting attention. Soon the glare of fire appeared, now here, now there, showing that the town was being set on fire systematically from various points. For time the fire brigade were able to subdue the fames in some places, but a strong wind was blowing, and the incendiaries were euergetic in their work. About eight o'clock a Russian officer who was also in the hotal suggested we should make a sortie with closed ranks in order to reach a steamer in the harbour. This was agreed to, and we set out. Thuse in front were molested by some of the soldiers, but others of the mob fried. Let them go! We reached the harbour safely, where luy the steamer Falk, with her stern only at the pier, ready to steam away at a moment's notice." A ladder was let down, and the captain took us all on an overwhelming success..

MEXICAN CLIFF-DWELLEES
DISCOVERY OF A STRANGE KACE.
A little colony of American aborigines, who are believed to be a remnant of those ancient oliff-dwellers who built their huts in giddy precipices in Arizona and New Mexico, have been discovered in the mountain fastnesses al Mugusrichic, in the Sierra Madre. According to the Mexican Herald, this strange race was
scantly discovered by one Bon Goel, a minerí of Maguarichic, who says that the people are ! small and swarthy, and entirely different from the Tarahumaris Indians and Mexicans of that! section. Their mode of life is extremely primitive, and they are very timui avoiding Contact with other people. They will molest no one unless their houses or property are dis turbed, and thon they will fight. Their arm8 are bows and arrows, When stranger stian's up zmong them they fles to their dwellings or the brush. They cultivate small patches of beans and corn in the canons and valleys near their homes. Their language is entirely different from any other, and their vocabulary is small, probably two hundred words, according to a Catholic prient. Father Mariano Guerrero, who is said to have bren among them. This priest says they have at some time learned something of the Catholic faith, and recognise him as a priest. The Mexicans seem to know practically nothing abent these strange people, and take no interest in them. Around Maguarichis many skeletons are found in the cares on the mountain sides, apparently indicating that theymy have be much, more numerous up to the time of the adrent of the Spaniards and later.
