No nesful purpose can be served in attempting to write on a subject of this kind for the ostensible benefit of the Oficial Members of Council, but we wonder what the Unofficial Members of the Council will do in the premises, Certainly the whole community will closely and anxiously watch their actions in respect thereof.
For their enlightenment we could paint ont that (we quoto the Colonial Office List) "the Crown Agents for the Colony receive instrue tions directly from the Colonial Governments." We are entitled, therefore, to demand, in the interests of all of one local rate-payers who are to be muleted an account of this stupendous jobbery, when, and by whom, and with whose stuction, it was ordered that no Straits firm should be permitted to tonder for this, the biggest contract over awarded, or promised, in this part of Asia.
WHO GAVE THE ORDER.
An order of such a magnitale must exist in the Seorslaciat, unless--which we doubt it was writing. It must have been issued through conveyed in a private memorandam of H. E. the Governor. The matter, however, is one which can be easily settled, by some Unofficial Member of the Legislative Council requesting that all papers in the case may be laid upon the table.
LICENSED PICK-POCKETS.
In the Home press and in the Home Parliament there have been frequent and recent uprisings against Crown Agents, aut the administrative systems under which they are tolerated. It is solely due to the powerful family influences they command that they have been able to continue their existence as the licensed pick-pockets of Colonial exchequers.
It will be made the care of the Straits Times to furnish all interested Members of Parliament, and certain influential journals in the United Kingdom with full details of this, the latest attempted depredation of theso Agoats.
