PARSEES AND PROSELYTISM.
Mr. D. S. Dady Burior was interested by our extract hearing the above heading, which told how the Parser onthorities bad decided to dis- courage the promisenous admission of aliens, who for one reason or suother sought to enter the Zoroastrian fold. He writes a long letter: relation to its general much too long in interest, to prevent a wrong impression which wa do not think need seriously be feared by our Parses friends. He says:
This question has agitated not only tas Parece community of Bombay for those hust two years but it has also been keenly watched by the Parsees sonitered over all parts of India xnd China, and it would be no exaggeration to say that the decision sa menimously arrived at at the mass 4ooting of the community held al Bombay after an exhaustive surver of the question from religions, moral, and social standpoints by the community for the purpose is upheld and ópplauded by an overwhelming majority of the Parecen
He proceeds to show that the Parsees ato most tolerant in their regard of other religions und (unnecessarily, we think) denies that they claim to have the ouly Trathi, or a monopoly of (as he phrases it) "high seata in Heaven." The others have their equivalent versions of the Zoroastrian teaching in faroar of "purity et thought, parity of words, parity of deeds." and he thinks they should be content.
Mr. Daily Barior continues: "It is this senti. mant of universal respect for all the known religions of the world, prevailing amongst the educated and intelligent classes in India, that has been standing in the way of the Christian Missionaries there, for though the admirable educational institutions in the shape of high. wahools, and collagen, athliated to different universities, founded by these good people are fully taken advantage of by the natives; and eren bible classes are attended for the sake of
mantal culture, and the tempting prizes offered, whenever that men are approached with an offer to proselytiem, these rovorend gentlemen are confronted with the incontrovertible answer that there is nothing in the religion of Jesus the Christ, that is not to be found in the religion of their birth. It is, therefore, but natural that the Parsees have set their faces doté against Buch intraders in their midst by so many traitors to their family, community, and God."
In other words, Zoroastrians fear fhut those who relinquids ono faith with ease are unlikely to greatly ornament a second. It is also a The Parsee com- question of purity of race. munity at last ernene "hardly numbered a bundred thousand," and if intermarriage were freely countenanced, the race qua race would inevitably perish, which would be a pity. The introduction of recruits would tend to the Zoroas- adulteration also of the pure creed. trianism as it is is good anqagh for the Parsees. To keep it as it is, they must be conservative. We odtaire them for it: and could wish that other cults would exercise restraint.
