SINGAPORE'S RUSSIAN SPY.
Chief Justice Sir Lionel Cox gave judgment in the Supreme Court at Singapore on May 31st, in the appeal by Vladimir Antenovitch Harvitch, the Russian who was convicted before the Magistrate of trespassing on the fortifications at Palo Brent and of being in pessension of sketebing materials within the vicinity of a fortification. Mr. G. E. Raino conducted the appeal.
His Lordship aid it had been peinted out to bim by conusal for the appellant that in the King & Regulations it was provided that certain
might be admitted without passes to fortifications or places reserved for military and naval operatious. One of the classes so provided for was wives, foullies, friends and servants of the residents. Mr. Raine had argued that appellant was a friend of Conductor King of the AO.C., in whose quarters he was living at Con- dastor King's invitation. His Lordehip did not agree with that view. This regulation evidently referred to persons whom a resident knew and conid answer for. Accused was at a friend of King in that sense. He was really a stranger to him. All that King know about the man was what he himself had told him that he was Russian soldier who had deserted from the army. At the Magistracy, again, the accused said he was an offeer and had served his term in the army. Under the cironmstances his Lordship was of opinion that King was not justiled is passing this Rassian soldier or ofloor as his friend and that he had no authority under the regulation to bring such Eren although a person into his quarters, be went there on King's Invitation the regu lation did not autho ise him to live there without a permit and he did live there for game 14 days.
