Kidney disense does not usually come with a sharp paid. If it did it would not be so dangerous, because the patient would at once work treatment and relief.

On the contrary, most often it comes ou quietly-may have been working la the systom for years before the patient suspected the road canse of his trouble,

Shipping freight wars, either internosine- in which British companies are fighting one another-or international-in which war is waged by British lines against foreign con petitors seem to ba u perennial feature of modētu ocean carrying businoes. Hurdly a year passes without one or more of these ware; at present there are thrco. As soon as a co- bination of British lines, usually called a conference, establishes what is regarded as a profitable trade from British or foreign ports there is a natural tendency for outsiders to rush

There may have been beatinchos, limb achos, in with a desire to share. A freight war follows, and this outsiders are either driven away or are eventually admitted into the con-euralgin, sciatica, rheumatism, u norvonM ference; the result depends upon their strength. irritable feeling, or a generally tired fooling. From one point of view these wars are desirable weak heart, dropsy, oto, as tending to keep down the high freights which would result from a monopely in any trade. But it happens that these wars have another and most injurious effect upon British trade; they tend d strongly to assist the export trade of foreign countries, especially of America aud Gormany, at the expense of British trade. And at the present ranment the three shipping wars now being waged are assisting foreigners to compete successfully with British canu- facturers in South African, Australasion, and in Indian markets.

He did not know these were symptoms of kidney disease, and so he doctored the symptoms, and not the kidnoys,

A corresp Rives au interesting account of the freight war in the trade between Now York and Australasia. On one site are four is un British liass and opposed to them American company and the White Star Line (nominally American, but pazely British in management). In the Indian trade the circumstances are different. Hore we have a purely international struggle betweau the P. and U. and British India liues on the one hand and the German Hansa Line on the other. But the effect is much the same in its nature as in the South African and Australasian trades, though far smaller. As our Commercial Correspondent in Herlin wrote laat week, "The competitive re- duction of freight rates between Antwerp and British India by the Gorman Hansa Line, of Bremen, as against the P. and O. Line, has stinalsted the export trade in the Belgain mineral market with India and the Far East." It is also obvious that while the British com. panies and the Hansa Company are cutting freight rates between Antwerp and India, it is possible for German expertors to ship much more cheaply to India vie Antwerp than British exportere can ship from London.

We do not suggest that British shipping companies who bring about or engage in these freight wors, which operate to the serious detri- mat of British trade, pay no regard to the wider trade interests of this country. But the anagers naturally first consider the interests of their own companies, and as their operations are subjost to no control comparable to that exercised over railway companies, the British manufacturer is epoodily forgotten in the heat of conflict. When the serious results to the country of their preferential rates to foreigners aro pointed out, they always reply that the effect of the war is deeply regretted, and that it is only of temporary duration. One is further assured that presently peace will end the preferential system. But the un fortunate British manufacturer, penalized often by his own shipping companies, can derive little consolation from these sysurances. As soon as peace is made in one shipping trade, war breaks out in another, and we liave the whole preferential story over again. position of British shipping companies is, of course, very dificult. Ganera! Linevitch, the referan commander of the forces of the Czar in tbo Far Eat telegraphed 872] his angust master to-day that the report of the disastrous defeat of the Russian fleet which had spread among the soldiers of his great army," had caused a porientous mutiny.

The army refuses to fight.

The half million and mure men have held meetings and passed resolations that further eforts against the Japanese would be useless, and that surroader of retinal to Russia is warranted by the situation.

General Linovitch acknowledges that he is unequal to cope with the situation. He says that from all appearances the army will lay down its arms at every opportunity.

Hestaten the facts and, though repeating his Towals of his willingness to lia for his emperor, he questions the wisdom of pushing thunderbelt out further operations against the enemy.

The news has come like a of a clear sky on the Czar and his advisers, as only one week ago Prince Khilkor, the head of the Russian Imperial railway system, had returned to St. Petersburg from Manchuria with the cheering information that the troops were in magnificent spirits and condition, and had every confidence la General Linevitch and ultimate victory,
