The least known portion, perhaps, of the Australian Cunamonwealth is that immense tract of country, embracing an area of about 323,620 square miles, or 335,116,800 meres, formerly known as Alexandra Land, and constituting the middle of the three scutions into which northern or semi-tropical Australia is divided. The country is under the tentative control of the South Aus- tralian Government, which is seriously handicapped in its endeavour to develop the rích natural resources of the land by reason of there being no regular communication, savo by sea, which involves a voyage round fully one-half of the island-continent. Another handicap is a wilful one, the pre- judice against Chinese or Indian labour. There are several harbours, the principal being Port Darwin, one of the finest in the Commonwealth. Another fine port, grent size, is situated at the entrance 10 the Victoria River. There are several large rivers, most being navigable for a considerable distance. Numerous import. ant discoveries of gold, copper, tin, iroa, lead, and other minerals have

A limitel portion of the metalliferous country is being worked by Australasian, European, and Chinese syndicates, but the scarcity and dearneas of inbour Las proved a formidable difficulty. The country is semi-tropical, but white settlers, taking duo precautions as regards dietary and personal cleanliness, de not suffer any ill-effects. The rich fertility

cattle to be 291,970, borses 15,763, sheep 51,538, and goats 12,972. Some portions of the pastoral land may be had on applicu, tion for lease for 42 years at the annual rental of 6d. per square mile for the first seven years, 18. per square mile for the -second seven years, and 2s. per square mile for the third seven years, and for the remainder of the term at such an amonot per square mile as shall be fixed by valuation. The population of the Northern Territory, exclusive of aborigines, in 1903, was estimated at 4,182, or 0,01 to the square mile, and this in a country capable of sustaining a population of several millions! Mr. Dixon (of Mr. John Hastings' office) appeared for the plaintiff in this case and for the defendant in a erass action. Mr. H. Hursthouse (of Messrs. Dennys and Bowley) appeared for the other side.
·
The action, maid Mr. Dixon, was brought to recover $718,12, being the amount of damago and toss sustained by the plaintiff by reason of a breach of contract dated April 19th, 1995. This contract was entered into between the defendant and plaintiff under the following
circumstances:--The defendant is the sempra-
dore of the Messagories Maritimes Company; and during the five days set apart for the celebration of the Birthday of the Goddess of
Heaven, April 23rd to 27th, defondant chartered
two river steamers, the Paul Bear and Charles Harisaia, from the Messageries Maritimes Company to run between Hongkong and Sbekwan. On the 19th April the plaintiff was npproached by a friend of the defendant and asked if bộ would agree to uct as steward and sell refreshments to the passengers on board the steamer. The plaintiff had an inter- view with the defendant on the 19th April, when it was agreed that the plaintiff should
have exclusivo right, for 85 a day, to sall refreshments. He was to bare the nws of the kitchen on board the steamer, and an agreement was drawn up showing that the plaintiff was to have exclusive right. The cross action was in respect of this $25 a day. The plaintiff on the first day found a good deal of opposition going on against him. The stoward of the steamer was selling meals and drinks. The plaintiff remonstrated with the defendant, and the defon- aut admitted that the stoward ought not in be alling in opposition. Furthermore, the plaintiff promises that the opposition should cease, but it The plaintiff not continued for the five days. only aufered directly by reason of the compoti- tion, bat a considerable amount of provisions had to be destroyod,
