Another Japanose article much in demand by the people of Canton is cotton crape. This is one of the staple products of Japanese manu facture, and of recent years this crap, both plain and flowered, bas como largely into so mong Chinese, It is found peculiarly suitable for underwear, not being so cold and chilly to the skin as plain British cotton, nor so thick and warm as flannelette. In 1901 the import was 398,535 yards, valued at 31,355 taels (4,479) Japan has been successful in laying down in the Canton market a cotton cloth made by inadd in imitation of Chinese natiyo nlothi Being cheaper than the real article this import finds & rourly Rate, and, as it lasts the summer season, Chinese are content with it as clothing. In 1003 the import of this imitation native clothi was fi3,488 varile, which in 1904 rose to 126,418 yards, that is, nourly doubled; hat, owing to the rise in the price of raw cotton, the value is fully three times greater than in 1903.
The import of rabber shoes deserves special notice. Six years ago this trade did not arist: during the past year fally 300.000 pairs were brought into Canton. The Chinese have taten to them readily, The shoes are well made and according to Chinese pattern; they last longer than the native-made shoo, and, what is an Important consideration in South China, they dre impervious to wet and damp. The retail prico is about 28. per pair.
ALL OVER THE WORLD."
AN ÜLD SOLDIER, CURED OF SEVERE IN- DIGESTION, TILIA WHY AND WHERE HE RECOMMENDS MOTHER NEIGEL'S ATEU?.
"I have since then recommanded Mother Saigel's Syrup to my friends all over the world, the Gold Coast especially."
This is the statement of a veteran soldier of the British arms, who was born in the West fadies, served in the Ashanti war and is still in the service," being employed by the Army Service Crops in the Military Stores at Port Elizabeth. He had suffered for years fron indigestion is Tamsin and has since felt its distressing pains and disablements in Africa. In all cases, on both sides of the world, he turned for actual help, for, relief, to Mother, Seigel's Syrup chiefly because his own mother' had used it successfully with him and others of bor children.
Mr. Carter is a native of Kingaton, Jamaica, near which vily his father carried on a large plantation Ile oulisted in the First West India Regiment and was promoted throught various racks to that of Quarter-Master Sor geant, seving, in all, for 27 yours. He lives, now at 25, Frere Street, South Ead. Port Elizabeth. His experienes has been so wide. spread and unique that what he says is of particular interest, so we give his letter, dated November 21, 1904, just as it was received.
THE SOLDIER'S OWN STORY.
"I cannot recollect the exact data of my first attuck of indigestion bat, anyway, I was a Quarter Master Sergeant of the 1st British West India Regiment at the Sims and stationed at Kingston. I used to feel out of sorts; I always fell as though I had eaten too much, oven though, in fuot, it would be the smallest moreel. I had a blown-out, paffed-up. sensation after each meal, and I can assure you 1 folt minerale.
Remembering that my parents had weed Mother Seigel's Syrap for the younger membera of our family, and as they pinned their faith to Mother Seigers curative powers, I considered 1 would not go for wrong by giving it a trial myself. I hart suffered for three years and was determined to get rid of my trouble somehow. I was walking up Orange Street, Kingston, Jamaica, who I came to Dr. Goddous chemist shep and there I purchased a bottle of Mother Saigel's Syrup. I used it for about two months. at the end of which I found I had no further need of medisince or doctors: I was completely cared.
"I have since then recommended Mother Solgale Syrup to my friends all over the worki the Gold Coast especially, where I had to give myself another conres of Saigel's owing to the severe climatic conditions and the generally
healthy condition of our Hving. I am still enjoying good health and pleased to be able to give you this statement.
Little is heard nowadaya of piracy on the consts of China, but recent consular roports make it clear that in some parts it is still au unis puted means of livelihood. In the Canton delta aud along the coast, where the practice still Hourishes, Mr. Scott states that during the past year there were half-a-dozen serious organised attacks on British ateam launches. Complaints are made to the local authorities, but nothing is really done to protect trails, pirates and zob- bery plandering and looting with impunity oven within the precincts of the harbour at Canton. "Altogether the situation is hopeless, and one is forced to despair of good government under the present officials. This insecurity of life and property tells seriously against all development of trade. Foreign goods sont into the interior under transit passes are pirated, and only in cue singla instance, after aighteen months of argus iag and battling with the officials, has a Consul succorded in obtaining the recovery of a few articles and the arrest of a few men, whom the magistrate gravely gives out as being the lprits. In one case a Hongkong jank was pirated and the cargo landed in broad daylight of under the eyes of the local officials by the villagers, yet nothing is done and no redress call be obtained. Is there no possibility of help for the Consuls from the Foreign Offles? mercial Intelligence.

The death of a little village bow, knocked down by a motor car, provided the Daily Mail with another sensation, and it mate shape to repeat its popular stand for Adolf Back by offering £100 toward for information that would lead to the conviction of the motorists. Now mark the Sequel: The Weekly Dispatch says that the car belonged to Mr. Hildebrand Harms- worth, brother of Sir Alfred Harmsworth, and Untonist candidate for the Wellington Division of Shropshire.
