THE

PREMIER

COPPER COINAGE OF CHINA.

The San Francisco Chronicle says:-United States Consul Anderson, Baugehow, China, sonds a brief report.of the monetary operations in Chinn, which indicates that the Chinese are not likely to reach a silver, let alone a gol, basis in the near future. He gives an account of a new mint established at Hangehow which will be devoted to the manufacture of cash, and he intimates that this ancient coin is likely to remain in favour indefinitely. Ho

"ODOROUS COMPARISONS."

A newspaper published in the Straits sectas to have indefinite ideas on naval matters, Ho indefinite that they am one thing at the top of a column but something entirely different a little typo lower down. For instance we find in largo hondings, "Most Magnificent Bea Spectacle Since the Armada"; "Forty-four Mighty battle Vessels in Battle Array" (a collier's array" is not bad in its way): and then the! anticlimas, "Not, a Stron Fighting Lot. A large number of mints have been built in past years, and 20 cash pieces are rapidly superseding the old edge cash pieces with the quare hole in the middle for stringing them. At first in Bangohan the 10 cash coins were issued and sold at the rate of 10.or nominally 1100 cash to the dollar (Mexi cap but later the price was raised to 100 dell, somfually 1000 casti tothe Mexican dollar. With the Mexican dollar changing for an aor. age of about 860 cash, however, and with Shanghai taking all of these coins it could get at 8 or nominally 840 cash to the dollar, the price was raised to M, or 900 cash to the dollar, and it has romained at that point ever since. A large number of 2-cent or 20-cash pieces are being made, most of them being shipped to Ningpo, where they are very popular.

The Chinese authorities of tida province ars making no arrangements for the coinage of IN CHINA and gives the most silver pieces of any denomination. From the manner in which they talk they seem to bave no expectancy of anything in the way of mone Lazy reform in the empire. Their coinage of these copper cent proces seems to have been very Makos profitable, but they will give no figures with

respect to their profit.

JAPAN'S CUTENESS.

The launch of the

of the

its

Japanese battleships which have, non fuit tw in England, is, says the Naval and Military Record, an excellent illustration of the foresight of the aval department at Tokyo. The orders were given immediately the war opened the. designs having been prepared previously. From the first, the Japanese were confident of success, but it was realised that however completo victory As Russia was building two might be, their fleet must almost inevitably suffer some damage:

determined battleships of 16,000 tons, Japan the ships were, as usual barod upon an improve- to lay down a similar number, and thodesigns of ment of British roadels, From another aspect the Japanese decision appears vorg clover. When the war opened it was said that Russin intended to drag Great Britain into the contest; this confirmed Japan in her intention to have the vessels built in England The reason for this must be apparent. If Russia had succeeded in embroiling Great Britain, these vessels would have been at once available to take the sas, since the English Government would no longer be neutral. If, on the other band, the conflict was maintaloel without the intervention of any other Powers, the vesseln would be interaad in England, friendly neutral, until the war ceased, and wand then be free to leave for Japas. From the first Russia has realised the important effect of this clerer move, and she has been fally conscious that in case of Great Britain joining in the fghting these two versote would be flying the flag of the Rising Sun long before the two vessels building in the Baltic could be ready for sea.

AN AMUSING STORY.

The collision of the German cruiser Freidrich Karl with H.M S. Prince George at Gibraltar follows a collision last year between the Hohen-

The zollern and a British torpodo-boat at Waite, the story of which is somewhat amusing.

It is reported, says the Swatow correspondent of the N.C. It is certain that a number of deaths have occurred in the country from a trouble which the natives cannot indentify. They know the symptoms of both plagues and will not allow that it is other of these. They have two explanations of the poisoning. Que is that this is a quantity of flour poisoned by the Russians in the hope that it would be held up by the Japanese, and so work them harm The other, and more coloured explanation. is that someone was smuggling morphine cone.led in flour, and that the medicine got long, the consignees lost track of the bags with the powder in them they simply sold tho lot rather than loss their profits. But each explanation leares a wide margin for dobaie, and the tee together out hard at the import of flour for the present.
