THE VLADIVOSTOK BLOCKADE.
The difficulty experienced in trying to van the blockade into Vladivostok is indicated by the report just made to the Western Fuot Company of Frisen by Chief Offleer Wobh of the steamer Wyefield, which was captured by the Japanose a few weeks' ngt. Two cases of small-pex among foreigners veinrred in Canton; bath these arrived in the port a'rendy infected. The first een, a Customs employé, came from Kumchuk, and was ionlated in Canton. Patient had been vacciunted once in infancy; had a wild attack of the discrete in variety and made an uninterrupted recovery.
The second patient was apparently infected in Shanghai or some other nortborn port. He was removed on the steamer of which he was au ofleer to Hongkong, where preparations wer made for reception and isolation patient. ra vaccination of all the crew, and disinfection of steamer. Patiert had a severe attack of the confluent type, bat ultimately recovered.
In all, five cases of diphtheria, among for eigners came under my notes during the winter monthe.
In the 15 months 12 cases of enteric facer mongst foreigners have come under my notice, and all, with the exception of three, occurred on Slamien. Two of these proved fatal. The first fatal ese occurred on 27th February 1903, and was complicated with maloria. The second case, that of a German living on Shamien, sad who also had malaria, was removed to Hongkong on 27th February, 1904, and died on the 22nd of the following zaith.
Of the 10 cases, all were of a mild type, except two, namely, the first being a lady who had lately arrived in the East from England, and was removed early in the disease to the Pesk Hospital in Hongkong; and the second patient bring a Customs employé, who was also removed to the Government Civil Hospital in Hongkong, where he ultimately recovered, after a relapse.

11. Efficiency experienced by this system in
similar conditions in other towns.
The system is recommendat should be used for algo and surface water oufy, and no sewage of any description. Various landowners would be required to connect their respective drains with mnicipal drains alongside their compound, and in most cases only at small cost. All sowage should be covered daily as at present time, Ly buckets, and is a source of revenue to the Municipal Council. Chikwali is a very small village about fifty miles north-west of Hanzeliow in the meuntalus. He had been in the village four weeks and had gathered about him several natives, who were either converts or prospective Christians. Mr. Cloud, the American Vice-Consul at Humehow, accompanied by an armed guard of soldiers from the Governor's yameu, started for the village of Chihwuli early on Tuesday morning, and arrived at Yulanglision at 3 p.m. The village of Chibwali was thirty miles distant in the mountains. Widespread regret will be felt at the news of the death of the Rev. Dr. J. Edkins, which sad avent took place on April 3rd at Shanghai, He was faken ill about April 36th with preumonia. By his death Chine loses one of its best known misionaries and sinologues. The N. C. Dady News comments:
