HONGKONG JOTTINGS.
A rumour has boon revirod this week that the Amarlon-Clina Derolopment Conipsny propose to extent their Samshuí-Canton line of railway down the river to Whampoa I say "revived" bocaue I ata now told it is not a new idea. I confess I had not heard antil this week that any definito scheme of this nature was matmed, but the extension of the line down the river must have been reckoned among the possibilities by all who have pondcred over thú monning of American railway enterprise in Kwangtung. A saward terminus will be wanted for the great arterial a from Itaakow to Canton when it is constructed, and it rests with the British and Chinose Corporation Limited to any whether they will provide it by constrce- ting without further dolny, their proposed rail- way from Kowloon to Canton, or, by neglecting their opportunity, comped the Chinese Govern- ment to listen to the overtures of a more enterprising syndiento to co nie somewhere elas aseaport tormines which may strongly affect the truds of this Colony. I am told that the Kowloon project is now being pushed along in every way possible. It is an assurance the community has had before, many a time, and it fails to inspire a sense of satisfaction. We want to see the project pustred along by gangs of coolies: and until we do see it pushed in that way our faith in an early construction of the line will romain weak,
There is something attractive about the iden of Whampoa being not up to rival Hongkong as an unpocin of trade. The corliest recol lections of foreign commercial intereaureo will Chion me associated with Whampoa, all foreign ships ongaged in the Canton trade boing in old times compelled to encher there, But there is a great differonca in the size of shipe then sud now, and what is more, the river ban boen steadily sitting up thereabout. On that account there are men who are not!
afraid that Hongkong would aufer much by the extension of the American railway to Whampoa. It must not be forgotten, however, that the Chinese authorities are now having the barriers in the river removed, and this work may improve Whampoa's chances of development considerably,
It is an easy step from railways to tramways Nothing has lately been made public as to the now Peak Tramway Bill which was referred to a committee of the Legislative Council some months ago. The Bill I am told is "hung up;" but for a short time only. Efforts are being made, I understand, to amalgamate the rival interests. In fact I have heard that the matter has been practically settled. It is said that the existing line will be brought down to Queen's Road on a vindnut across the prison ford and the other military premises lower down. Another Muggestion which I have board discussed in that the line should be takuti across the wilitary parade ground, and, by way of compensation to the military authorities, the piece of roadway | aow separating the barracks from theo parado ground should be closed to the public and incorporated in the parade ground. The idea is that the new road for the tramlins and other traffic scold be inade to skirt the Cathedral boundary and ture down to a point opposite

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "DAILY PRESS”. Bis, -I hope you will exonse me for all the candour I hope to import into this latter. I read your critique, en well na those of the other | journals;, and confess I thought the onlogies must all be the sickening adulation to which, deserved or undeserved, we are as regularly trosted in the newspapers of the East, where amateur players are concerned. I have neon the piece in various places lu England, and know it fairly well; and I suppose you have already been told that you, as well as some of your on. temporaries, appear to have got "mixed" over the plot, I visited the Theatre on Saturday evening, eat the play out, and decided that none of the papers had done justice to the extra ordinary merit of the performance. Here are some of my impressions, as a player and playgeer of some experience ¦--

This match was played at Happy Valley ou Saturday Inst.
The Civil Service team batted first, and after a very patient display amassed the formidable total of 20. No doubt they would have scored more runs but for the splendid bowling of Messrs. Mackay and Gibson, whose break bowling re- peatedly broke the wickets,
On the Hongkong team batting Mosare. Gibson and Falloon quickly bit off the necessary runs required to win without the loss of a wicket, thus wigning by 4 raus and 10 wickets.
