GERMANY AND JAPAN IN THE beyond the median line of the joining arch.
FAR EAST.
The Times correspondent at Berlin reports:- The commercial rivalry of Germany and Japan in the Far East förmod the subject of a lecture delivered at meeting of the German Colonial Society, with Dnke Johann Albrecht of Mecklenburg in the choir, in Berlin, last month. The lecturer, Herr Woas, appears to have been travelling in China and in Japan far the just 18 months, and he was chiefly cone-ried to show that Japanose competition was becon ing & serious danger to Gorman trade in East Asía. He draw attention to the ubiquitous activity of the Japanese trader and of his agents, who were to be met with not only on the coast of China, but in the towns of the interior and on every river. The fact that a Japanese technical high school had been established at Nanking was unmistakablo, evidence that the Japanese were bont upon securing a permanent footing in the Chinese markets.
This intention on the part of the Japanese seemed to constitute a sufficiently grave offence in the eyes of the lesiarer, but..judging by the exclamatory form of the sentence, the enormity of their venturing to compete with the Germans in Shantrang, or, as the lecturer described it, in our Sle-tnag," appears to have been beyond the power of mere words to express. The new railway from Tsing-tau to Tai-van-fu, which was the work of Geraan enterprise, had indeed in- creaked the trade of the province, but it was the -Japanese and not the Germans who had benefited The Japanese palmet off upon the unsuspecting Chinaman cheap and shoddy waves at prices and by methods with which the FFICES, (Single or in suite) in Newthe Japanese employee middlemen, while the Gorman iruder could not compete. CHINA AND THE TIBET TREATY.
Tang Shao Yi, who has been recently ap pointed a special commissioner for the purpose of investigating the question of the Tibetau treaty, and is to state the case for the Chinese Government at Calcutta, is a remarkable man and a member of an enlightened family. His elaor brother was the famous Tang-kio-sin, tho organizing head, if not the actual founder, of the China Mereluts Steam Navigation Com- pany, of which he was long the director. Tho first railway enterprise in China was largely due to Tang-kin-sin, us also the opening and working of the Tang Shan Colliories. Thanks to this older brother, two of whose sens have been educated in England, Tang Shao Yi. was sent to America to study law. He has a family of several daughters, all of whom have had a good Chinese education and the farther ad- vintage of instruction under a high-clas English governess, while his adopted son was placed under an English tutor in a good family.

The lecturer, however, confessed that, although The Germans were tolerated by the Chinese, the latter preferred to deal with the Japanese, and placed every possible obstacle in the path of Ger- man progress. The Chinese, for example, were now doing their best to bring about the construction- of a railway from Tsi-asa-fu to the coast which would terminate somo miles to the north of the concession of Tsing-tau and which would thus become a serious rival to the new German rail- way between Tsing-tau and the interior of the province of Shan-tung. A CASE OF TWIN-FORMED SISTERS,
One of those cases of eccentric development which occur from time to time, and excite the curiosity of the learned and the simple alike, are appearing at the Metropolitan Music- hall, Edgware-road, London. The ease is
one of twin sisters joined together through some failure of the normal process of develop ment. The girls are quite separate in head and limbs and in body far as two-thirds down
the back; below this they are united, not merely by a fleshy link, but by a firm bony arch, in which the bones of the pelvis appear to be merged together, involving a joint performance of some of the vital functions, The names of the twins are Rose and Josepha Blazok; they are natives of Bohemia and 26 years of age. They are very short-several inches below ft. and the left leg of the right-hand twin is a little shorter than the rest, but otherwise they are quite well developed, and they have the natural use of their limbs, though, of course, locomotion can be accomplished only by common consent. They move abont, however, quickly and easily and play the violin a little. The union causes them no pain whatever, and they do not seen to be conscions of any inconvenience. The girls are evidently of a very amiabis and cheer- ful disposition, and they are educated. They speak German as well as their native Caech, und are musical. Some curious points may be noted about this double existence in one. Their per sonalities are quite distinct. They like diferent things to eat and drink, though to some extent they share the nutritive process. One likes bear, the other wine; and it is noticeable that the beer
