which we should smick self-satisfiedly. At the best, it means that we are too prone to rid ourselves of the pesterers by means of the eleemosynary dollar; or that we hav.. some feeble notion of maintaining the prestige of the whiteman with the yellow by covering up our social sores. The last idea is a mistaken one, for so long as a philau thropic or grandmotherly government insists on persuading the yellow man that he is, our brother and fellow subject, he will not see anything to respect in our immaculate whiteness. Philosophically and ethically, especially if we be at Home, we are bound to disapprove the attitude of those colonists who (us ag. the Australians) draw-a colour line. Choser acquaintance with the foots. introduces the question of expediency, and different views. On the other hand, if the yellow man is our brother, why should we contemplate with indifference, or compara. Doz.tive equanimity, the yellow pauper; and be so greatly exercised in mind because a shiftless White is in temporary straits?
Our opinion is that philanthropy is wasted, and worse than wastel, 00 these pe'er-do-wells; for we are convinced that no really honest, industrious, and ordinarily capable mau uced long fail to find some bonest employment in a com- munity as large as that of Hongkong or Shanghai. For those who are not honest, or not willing to work, why should we be squeamish? Let our municipality or G vernment provide, not were houses of detention, but "work"-houses in the rea; sense of the word, making the inmates earn by a positive putting forth of energy the food and shelter they pretend is all they need. In a very short time, the regular professionals would disappear; and we shout acquire a more sensible reputation that would keep away the humbugs who at present dock to our ports. It is dangerous, Port required for immediate use should be and it is wrong, to encourage the numerous ordered to be decanted before being sent out.

After a very successful season, Harmston's Circus is now leaving for Munile. The last performance was on Saturday night, and was fally up to the average. The bicycle which was filed was won by an Indian hoy. The whole show concluded with the lion performance, which was nearly ending in serious consequences. One of the lions was in a very bad humonr and as the daring trainer laid on his whip snapped at him viciously. Harder came the blows of the whip, but the king of beasts was not to be cowed, and springing at the trainer, just missed his thigh, but catching his trousers,
rent them to shreds. The trainer waited no longer, but quickly decamped from the cage.
