Tho report and accounts of the Hongkong, Gas Company for that year of dismal darkness 1903, are truly illuminave. The accounts show a profit-balance of £8,761, which is about 2,500 larger than the preßt balance of the previous year. The balance brought forward From the last account was E87. which was more thun saf-ient to pay 10 per cent. dividend The Directors thus had i stal profit of £21,154 | to deal with! After dockering à 10 per cent. dividend and a bonus of Ier caut. and adding 23,000 to reserve fund to weet Ructuations in exchange, and £1,000 to the general reserve fand (which now stands st 623,109), a balanco of £7,025 is carried forward to next account.

Several complaints respecting the new trum service have been published in the papers, but there is one matter of complaint very gonerally mentioned in conversation which has not. I think, been touched upon in the letters to the newspapers. It concerns the first-class sceoni modation in the cars. The seats which on the ran oust aro labelled third-class, and are occupied perhaps by a crowd of coolice whose garments and personal habits are not of the cleanest, are on the run wost labolled "frat class." and Europeans are expected to take the souts which the aforesaid thitil-class passougers have just vacated. Why, while the proprietors wore about it, did they not provide turntables at the terminal points of the line so that the first-clung seats tight be reserved as such whether the

Hongkong, 15th August, 1901, MINING IN GERMAN NEW GUINEA. Among the passagers on board the G. M. S. Prin: Waldemar, which arrived at. Brisbane, verently, from Singapore, vin German New Guinea, was Mr. H. Rodatz, whe joined the vessel at Herbertshole. Mr. Rodutz went to German Na Gainen about seven years ago, and was in charge of the German New Guinea expedition known as Ramu and afterwards of second known as Houngolf. These we expeditions were sent out to search for gold. HAVE YOU TRIED The members of the first-named party travelled inland about 156 miles. and found, gold at various places but not in sufficient quantì- ties, On the second ocession, the country the San surrounding what is known as Francisco River was prospected. This party proceeded along the river and up the ranges to a height of over 8,000ft., and it also prospected country near the Merkham River, but geld was not found in payable quantities.
