The slow growth of plants has been studied by taking accessivo photographs at consider- able intervals and rapidly reproducing the views in the kinematograph. The suggestion is now made that the formation of clouds and other ineteorological phenomena be observed in likes manner. 300 pictures or more being taken in an hour and then thrown upon a screen in a minute or so. Other slow processes in nature can be affectively studied by the same means.

Recent remarkable effects of lightning on the bridge of the "Galicia," of the Handburg- American line, hava opened a new investigation. Comediately after a brilliant flash the second officer was surprised to find an imprint of his hand on cabinet on the bridge, and was farther amazed to see the sillorette persist as much as five minutes. Experimenting a little, he obtained a shadowgraph of his observation instrument and one of a life preservec, such details being brought out on the ship's paint as the cross-lines on the instrument's objective and the lettering on the life-preserver. It was found that only the dump, gray paint over woodwork was sensitive, anil in effect was obtained on the dry paint or on the paint ever iron. The composition and pucalistition of the paint are to be slotermined, a gestion being that some ingredients have phosphores cent properties.

The delicate microbalance of E. Salvioni consists of a this thread or ribbon of glass or other material, sed at one and and plazed in a closed case, with weights of platinum wire and silk threal to be manipulated by a suitable handle. The flexure of the loaded thread is noted by the aid of an onlar micrometer. In the experiments made, a glass threal four inches long and somewhat less than one han3- dredth of a juch in diameter, with an arrange ment to magnify 10 times, weighed to one thousandth of milligram--or one sixty-five 1bonsaith of a grain--while capable of sup porting by Bexure a weight of more than 100 milligrams. With the apparatus the loss of weight of misk by volatilisation has bee demonstrated and proven to be proportional to
the timo.
Running animals show marked adaptive modifications. Mr. R. S. Lull points out til the greatest modifications are in the limbs, but there is also an elongation of the head and neck is long-legged types, and the body is further adapted for speed by a shape giving minimum air resistance and by increased heart and lung capacity. In jumping formas there is increase in the length and weight of the tail, which bas to act as counterpoise.
