FORGING AN ORDER.

Ip Lum, a boatman, was charged with having on 4th April offered a forget rejuest for the. delivery of oven pieuls of rice purporting to he chopped by the Fung Yan Loong firm.

He pleaded not guilty.

The Attorney-General in opasing the muse stated that on the morning of the day in ques tion. about ten o'clock. the accused went to a shop called the Yee Fang and asked for and got some samples of ries About mid-day be returned and said he was satisfied with the samples and brought as unler for seven piouls of rice. The rice was delivered to him on this order and was taken away to his boat. Meantinic the You Fung ärm sent the bill to the Fung Yan Loong firm upon whose supposed order the rice had been delivered. The latter repudiated the order. The Yee Fung there upon did their best to get their rice back and recovered it on board the defendant's bout.

BEFORE MI H.H. J. GOMPERTZ (ACTING POLICE MAGISTRATE).

A SCANDALOUS AFFAIR, On the 11th inst. at about midnight an Excise officer knocked at the door of a house at Yaumsti, a bridal clair-shop. IIe interrogated the shop- keeper us to whether he gold cigarettes. The lattor asked who he was. He said he was policeman. The Excise oflier, agording to vileme, then gave the shopkeeper two slaps on the head, saying he was furdy in opening the door, and he then went away.

The defendant was fined $2. There have been several cases of Excise, officers being assaulted of late. If others are like this one, no wonder!

Mr. E. H. Sharp, K.C., who represented the Attorney-General, stated in his opening the case that the accused were an accountant and a coolie respectively of a miscellaneous store OET the ground Door of No. 15. Gough Street, of which the upper floors were occupied as a Chinese boarling-house. store was new business begun on 27th January. The master of the shop put in certain anumat of stock, and then proceeded to insure it, effecting insuries amounting to

four the people on the first floor were wakened by shouts of "fire" coming from the floor above, whence apparently they haul on the fire burning in the rear part of the floor premises, across the shift that ran from top to bottom of the building. They ran downstairs into Gough Street and pushed open the door of the shop, Several men was out. They caught the second prisoner and handed him over to the police the others got away. When they went inside. the shop it was found the roar portion of the building was filled with smoke and flambe, There were three separate fires and cue witness would say that the goods in this stare room were arranged so as to barn, these consist [ing of packing-cases, fire wool, Japanese charcoal.. and cheap straw hats. The fire was put out, Next day, while the shop was in charge of the police. the first prisoner appeared, took them to another house and showed them the hooks of the firm which he said he had varied. Thes books, he would show, had all town written up at the same time and by one IAH Frota them it appeared that the valus of the stock was $10,000--the amount of the insurance Mr. Lammert woulit tell the jrry that lo intimated the value of the stock at $1,900.
