The scientific culture of potatoes is nowhere practised us in Germany. In that country, staten Consul-General Mason, dozens of skilful and experienced growers give their whole time and energy to the propagation of improved varieties, and the conditions of soil, exposure, or purpose for which enol is best suited are woll understood. Cortaín variotics excel for food, others for starch and dextrine, olbers for lockel, and yof othnes for stook-fe Nag. Many of the best sorts are new, but not mors than 20 varieties are included in the crop of practical growers, although about 100 are listed by dealers, and as many as 500 were catalogued as long ago as 1863.

Human power and machins power are found by Prof. Schmoller, of Berlin University, to have been equal in Germany in 1850, when the population was 18,000,000, one-half being la bourers. In 1895, with a population of 56,00 -,#00 and the same proportion of labourers, the meline power had reached six times the manual, or, according to some antuurities, ten times.
Only 54 por cont. of Germany's young met are fitf military service. De. Stricker finds that heart-diseass has increused 300 per cent, în aj decade.
While strong plants destroy weaker ones by crowding, or by depriving them of air, light, or food, it is rather surprising to bear that one plant may poison another. In a recent case reported in England, the plant called Humen elegans, which exhales a powerful odour of Bus- isia leather, was placed in a greenhouse near a peach-vins, when the nearest leaves of the latter bogan to wilber and fall off. The influence was folt oven at considerable distance, the resalt being that at last the young leaves were all stripped from the peach.
