HONGKONG JOTTINGS.
The attention of Hongkong so of the Colony's numerous visitors is rapidly being concentrated on the Raury, which begin to morrow; ajal, as there is a great dearth of war mugs, there is little to distrant our attention- except, of course, the calls of business. I nin rather templed to envy our friends from Shanghai who come era for China New Year and ar siepping over the Race Mouting. When can we in longkong take as long a holiday? Yet I noticed in a local paper recently that a correspondent's appeal to the Editor to say whether we did not have too faw holidays in Hougkong was met by n stora negative. From an ditor, of all men, this we are. But I am given to understand that Editors have so much grown to like constant work that they expect other and non-editorial teu to do the same. This week, however, en in Hongkong, is claimed as an atmost universal holiday after about 12 o'clock in the morning. We only want a continues of the present delightful weather to make the holiday a very pleasant one. Some propie, nu doubi, will add that they also want a

A gentleman who has made a study of the defences of Hongkong -that is to say, as far as a more civilizu của study them-points out to mo the utter inadequacy of the protection provided for the vory Lonet of the island's vitality, Tytom Reservoir. From the direction of Wagian the great rotaizing woll of the reser voir could be destroyed with a few aceurately placed shells and Hongkong male practically uninhabitable or liable to cupitulution to an enemy. Of coarse such an occurrence a romote contingency, bat recent events at Fort Aribur have shown how swift-moving warships car rash in and strike hart and sure and got away again in safety. The Engineers are engaged at present in constructing a now. military road up the hill which stands on the north of Tylam, so that it looks as if the Garrison authorities are at last going to provide batteries to cover the waterworks.
