SPORTING NOTES.
The principal event down for decision to-day is the game on the Cricket Grenad between the H.K.C.C. and the Teak. The Club has managed to get together a moderately strong team, and the Penk bau at least Hancock, Dixon, Arthur, Chichester, and Sercomle Smith There seems, however, considerable doubt whether a full team can be put into the field by the Highlanders, and we may have to fall back on or of the scratch matches which interest the players more thau the spectators.
The burning question in the Cricket Club at the present moment is whether we should continue to have boundary-hits on the Cricket Ground or run all bits out. There is much diversity of opinion on the subject, and it is not probable that it will be settled without a goner 1 meeting of members. Several members bare written at length on their views, and no doubt what they may will receive duo attention. The two principal points, it seems to me, aro: (1) Does the abolition of boundaries improve the ont. fielding? (9) Is it possible, from the nature of the ground, to have a general system of running ont? As, for the first question, there sooms little doubt that the fielding of the Inte Inter. port team was vastly improved by the suspension of the boundary rule. This in itself is on argument of very g eat weight. As for the other point, the circumscribed nature of the ground and the enciclement of iron railings undoubtedly maka activity in the long fold difficult, if not sometimes oven dangerous, The no-boundary party is determined to fight the matter out to the bitter end, convinced that the interests of good cricket will be served by the principle which they upheld, still it seems that a number of leading logal cricketers are nrrayed on the other side.
Local orivksters were nutarally much in terested in bearing of the possible return of the M.C.C. team For Australis via the Far East, and the idea of a possible game is very enticing. As to the probability of its coming of it is safer to say nothing. The last match of Warner's mea in Australia is 7. South Australia at Adelaide on the 12th-16th Morob, which would not allow them to be herr, provided they coine, until well into April, the end of out-Hesson. It is well not to be too hopeful Colotobo land a sad disappointment when the Oront arrived, but Warner was no doubt right in refusing to let his invalida (of whom there woro Beveral) tako the risk of the Colombo sun.

The impetus given to second class cricket by the formation of the Hongkong Cricket League is undeniable, and the entry of the H.K.C.C. "A" team will be additional incitement to the struggle. By the way, notice that in some quarters the expression "second class cricket" as applied to Dave in the Ham Valley is, nbiosted to. This mast of pourse arise from the objectors want of knowledge of the meaning of second clast, which, as used in sport, does not imply pcial distinctions. The second olaza cricket counties at home do not complain of the title being applied to them, nor think that it means- they are looked on as "grocera or vendors of rine" in consequence. The orioket in the Happy Valloy is not up to the s'andard of 1 the E.K.C.C. at average strength. This has been demonstrated repeatedly in the past few yours, as any one resident so long in the Colony knows. The great merit of the new League is that it will rals the standard of
minor ericket and afford Hongkong the opportunity in the future of seeing a more varied programme in the cricket season, a feature which has bosa sadly missing beretofore. Football to-day is reprosonted by an Asso- clation match between the V.R.C. and the B.E.
at Causeway Bay, and a Ragis practice on the Happy Valley ground, which is now in very fair, form. We on bardly expect so good conditions for the carrying game this
mason as there were last season, for théaverage state of Hongkong turf is wont to favour followers of the Association code, A brick-like surface is not conducive to Ragby football.
