Complainast was in the habit of giving gold to his workmen with which to work, and he had lost $20 worth, recognised as that prodaood in Court. The pawn-tiokota for the gold were also found in the drawer. Que pawn-ticket was found on defendant relating to the pawning in Hongkong of a diamond ring to which was a stone resembling one he had given to Wong to set. Defendant had also received four diamonds, two of which were discovered in a small box; the other two in the same place were inferior substitutes, recognised as being of the number of the 15 stones given to Chi Choung.
Che Ku, wife of Ng Fak, gave evidence of her journey to Canton in search of defendant.
Wong 1 Lam admitted pawning the diamonds, and said that Chi Cheung ran away leaving a letter for his master. Chi gave him a diamond which he pawned for 8105, earning $15 on the transaction by telling his accomplice he only received $90. For Chi he also bought two diamonds; the price was $25 and he charged $39. Defendant stated that he was 19 years old, and had a previous conviction of laresay from the same complainant agṣinst him.
