INSPECTION MCEWEN'S CASE.
Hon. H. E. POLLOCK naked--
1. Is it the fact that the warrant for the arrest of Inspector R. G. McEwan for the purpose of bis being tried for bribery, was issued upon the sword" information of the Assistant Registrar-General, Afr. Clementi
2. Is it the fact that Inspector B. G. McEwen's application to the Government through his soliciters, for the payment by the flovernment to him of his legal expenses in connection with his recent trial for bribery, has been refused? If so, for what reason was such application refused?
3. For what reason has Inspector R. o. MoEwen been removed from his recent post sa Inspecter of Markets? Was he so removed in conarquence of an intimation having boon received by the Government to the effect that, walean ho was so removed, difinultion would be likely to occur in connection with the supply of poultry to the public from the Central Market?
The Co-OBIAL. SECRETARY replied- (1) It is the fact that Mr. Clementi, Assistant Registrar-General, laid the information on which the warrast for Inspector MoEwen's arrest was issued.
(2) It is the fact that Government refused to pay Inspector Mewen's legal expenses. There is no precedent for payment by Government of logal expenses in such a case and many prese donis for not paying them.
(3) Inspector McEwen was transferred to Kow- .loon because it was considered andesirable to employ him in the Central Market. No such intimation as referred to in the question wen made to Government nor was any application, request or suggestion for Inspector McEwen's removal from persons ont-ide the Government service mode to Government.

The COLONIAL SECRETARY replied The Government has mods enquiries and scertained that in July there were 1,372 floors vacant in, Victoria, and 1,3-5 in Kowlons, capable of accommodating 14,253 and 11.379 persons respectively.

battleship Kearsarge recently upon her second. speed trip across the Atlantic. From The Noodles to Tompkinsville sho ostered the distance with her engines running at the rate of 16.62 knots, although the actual speed, by reason of rough weather, was only 13.10.
Although this record has been subject of congratulation in the Navy, Rear-Admiral Evang is quoted as having declared, when he read the report of the voyage, that there are s dozen battleships in the Nary, including two. of his own, that could go the distance in perhaps
a little less speed and arrive, after such a voyage, in just as good condition.
In connection with the spoed-test of the Kearsarge the report of a similar test made of the ironclads in the Ariutio squadron, which has just been received from Roar Admiral Evans, will prova laterosting. During the run of the equadron from Yokohama. Chefoc, Admiral Evans determined to see what speed the Kentucky, Oregon, and New Orleans- could make. It was done on Juse 3, when five days out, and ro extensivo preparations had been made.
to
The Kentucky under natural drought for four hours made an average speed of 14.78 knots, Under forent dr aght she averaged for four hours 15.52 knots an hour and for two hours of this speeded to 16) kuota, un hoc trisl sko mada 17 knots.
The Oregon for four hours under natural- draught averaged 13.12 knots, for four hours under forced draught she made 15.5 and for two hoars of that time made 155 knots.
The New Orleans, which was a twenty-knot rhip on har builder's trial, ran 17 for four hours under natural forced draughts and for four hours under forced draught she made 19,6 knots.
This report shows to Rear Admiral Melvillə and Captain Perry, of the Bureau of Stoam Engineering, that the Kentucky which is a sistor, ship of the Kearsarge and was launched at the samo timo at the Newport News ship- yard, is as good a ship as the Kearsarge, that the Oregon is able to duplicate the great record which she made in rounding the Forn in 1808 and the New Orleans is as good a ship to-day as when she was purchased.
