"Catatypy" is the name given by German photographic chemists to the now process of printing without light Hydrogen dioxide is poured over the negative, after which a piece of | paper--sized or quafred, rough or smooth-is STOCKlaid on, and by a contect of a few seconds this receives the picture, hydrogen dioxide being destroyed. Several prints can be made from a single application. The invisible image on the paper is developed by being drawn through a solution of ferroas valde, when the prutoxide DIRECT FROM THE FACTORIES, is transformed into oxide, and the iron oxide gives a yellow positive. Remediena sickness are still being sought. It man noticed by Otto Dora bluth, German, that the disagreeabla sOR- ration begins with the downward motion of the ship, and he recommends that during this sinking motion a deep inspiration be taken to throw the abdomen forward and render it tense. This mothed and a tight abdominal bandage seem to be equally beneficial. Par. ticularly susceptible persons are advised to a

Asregards messing on these ships, the present CENERAL DRAPERS, HIGH-CLASS DRESSMAKERS, AND systom whereby the whole responsibility of

GENTLEMEN'S OUTFITTERS, provisioning the vessel is thrown on the capitals who delegates it to a steward, is essentially wrong, since it offers every inducement to economise the food allowance in order to advance private interests. Last year a case of cholers having occurred on one line of steamers, repro- Boutations were made to theowners, with the result that the above system was replaced by a schoms in which a resident steward was appointed for the sole purpose of inspecting the food supply of these vessels--this particular line of steamers appear to have excaped cholera this year, only one case baving been reported on board the vessels, 1 think this experience affords an indication as to the course to be adopted by other shipping companies. I may add that there seems nothing at present to inculpate any special article of food, or any special source of supply, and the cases of cholors that have occurred in harbour have been fairly evenly distributed over all the moorings.

Lastly I would suggest that Public Health Notices on the same liors as ours, but specially adapted to the conditions that prevail on board ship, should be drafted out, printed in English and Chinese, and posted in frominent places to light, and it continued to shino in a dark (and more especially in the galleys), on board all room behind a half-inch oak shutter. The unicorn, so long regarded as a fabled creature, was a Jerso-like boast with a single" boru sticking out straight from its head, and it has been supposed that it was suggested by the rhinoceros, Prof. Whilhelm Booleche points out that bones of a hago horse-like beast that actually did carry such a single straight horn

are now known. It is called clasmotherium, and it was a contemporary of the mammoth in the Rhino Valley and in Siberia.

MESSING ON COASTERS AT SHANGHAI,

The following report by the Medical Officer of Health at Shanghai on the subject of cholora is published in the Press:--The Council ander- stand that preventative measures are being taken by the Companies concerned.

Shanghai, 9th September, 1903. SIR,In reply to the Council's enquiry of cholera oth regarding the incidenco board the shipping, I conferred with the Deputy Port Health Officer about a week ago on this subject and he was of opinion that the whole root of the stil lay in the extremely filthy state in which he found the ico-chests on board these vessels; be brought this matter to the notice of the Marine, Superintendent, and at an inspection of the vessels alongside found that the wharf his morning we this was in courts of being attended to, the with one exception, foreign ice substituted for chest having basa recently cleaned out, and, the flithy salive article.
