SPORTING NOTES.

THE INTERPORT CRICKET TEAM. Or Saturday afternoon practice on the Cricket Ground with a view to the coming Interport watch took more definite shape, some dozen or so of the selected candidates taking part in a regolar game on the pitch. Nalar ally, seeing that a couple of days at the nets is all that batamen and bowlers have had so far The game was one which does not call for detailed criticism. But a few notes on such play as was to be witnessed may be of interest.

To the latter remark an exception must be made in favour of Tarner and Pinree, who bath of them vermed to realise the importance of throwing in promptly and straight. The other players showed a singular lack of energy, not.

The tea market remains in the samo quiet stato as for some wooks post. Business has no doubt boen obecked by the continuous rising exoliange though to some extent, in Congou at any rate, by the smeliness of the stock offering. The arrivals of Congon to date, namely 166,000 half.chosts, show a falling off of 60,000 half-

On the same dng, in reply to Mr. Dillon, Lord George Hamiltou said: The negotiatious shortly to commence will doul with difficulties

which have arisen in the conduct of traila. between India and Tilht, under the regulations drawn up and six nest by British and Chineso Commissionure in 1893 to givo effect to the Convention of 1890 botween Great Britain and China. The negotiations will also deal with

frontier of Sikkim and Tibet, which woro

going after possible raves from a boundary, chests as compared with last year. The supply Anement in the stocks was the sentence passed Brazing and other disputes on the northern

shying in half-volleys to the wicket-koopor, and tailing to back up in proper style. As for the batting, Smith showed fair form and hit bard, but he (and other kard Littere) must remember that the boundaries at Shanghai are very lifferent indoed from ours and that an apple stroke, which here goes for a fourse, in Sbangkoi will probably lodge nicely in the hands of an out-field. All the ata displayed Jaziness between the wickets, not attempting to run hits out if there as a chance of a boundary. This is a disastrons policy, for at Shanghai, where the ground is very much larger than ours, boundaries are hard to get and a batsman who cannot run between the wickets will sacrifle ruu after run. A score of 20 at Shanghai will be as tiring to ran up as en 80 or 100 on our little ground. Moreover there is a hot and dry wicket to be looked forward to almost certainly.

The point of utmost importance is that our team wants conching by an experienced player, Whatever side may be chesen, it must be raw as far as interport cricket is concerned. Why cannot a player like Mr. Sercombe Smith or ouO of the other old Interport representatives be persuaded to take the team in hand and polish it up, pointing out mistakes, giving advice as to differences of conditions at Shanghai, sto. Surely one of the former upholders of Hong- kong's name can be found to devoto a little time and trouble to this work. There is so little time to lose that it should be taken in hand at once. In particular, the coach should insist on the differences between fielding here and in Shanghai, for good Belding will make an in- calculable difference.

The remark about the shortness of tine before the team starts on its way north applies with force, to the duties of captain. It is 'absolutely essential that the captain, whoever he is to be, should get to know his men and their peculiarities thoroughly. This was not the case at the last Interport contest at Heng; kong, as is sufficiently well known. Haphazard leadership only courts disaster. Especially in the management of the bowling is experienced command required; change bowlers must rot be more ventures, as is sure to happen anless

their real capacities are known.

1

One more remark only, One or two of the better players have not turned up yet. How will it be possible to pick the strongest team if these do not make every effort to some dona and get into practice? It only handicaps the

selection committee. There are of con business reasons which must sometimes keep men ont of the field. But it is to be hoped that all who have a chance of getting into the team bearing in thst than
