Ife pleaded guilty and was represtated by Mr. M. W. Blute, barrister-at-law (instracted by Mr. J. Hastings, solicitor). The Crown was represented by the Hon. Attorney General, Sir Honry S. Berkeley (instructed by Mr. H. Hursthouse of Messre, Dennys & Bowley).

The Attorney-General said the facts were vory simple and as they were already before his Lordship he did not proposis to add anything.

Mr. Slada stated that the prisoner had acted under bis advice in pleading guilty, and he had given that advice because it seemed to him that all the facts that could be put forward on the prisoner's behalf mounted to a strong recom mondation to mere rather than going to show that he was not gallty. The depositions

that the prisoner obtained the showed lotteis from the Post Office and produced a shop which ws on the face of it a Wing Loong chop and signed the Laws Li Yuse. The obor was undeniably a forged chop. It appeared that the prisoner did not know positively although he might have had a very strong ground for suppos- ing that the chop was not a genuine shop: But the depositions showed that La Ynea 'was not a fictitione person but was certainly at one time and until quite recently an employee of the Wing Loong shop, nccupying an important position. In the evidence of the master of the shop there was an admission that Li Yuva had claims to be a partuor. When the prisoner was asked by Li Yhen to go to get the regie tered letters for him, he subraitted that Chan Yik thought he was doing no wrong.

His Lordship-If he thought he was doing no wrong he should not have pleaded guilty,

Mr. Sinds proceeded to say that while Chan Yik was committing a crime in fact, he thought ho was excused by something he had in his possession-Damely, a letter of attorney authoris ing him to collect money for and sign the name of Li Yuen, Chan Yik did what he did do not for his own profit bat for the profit of the man Li Ynen. In the circumstances he submitted that this was a case to be commended very favourably to mercy.

His Lordship deferred contence until after the adjournment so that he might read through the depositions.; *

After luncheon, bis Lordship passed sentence "of two years' hard labour in respect of the first count, and one year's hard labour in respect of each of the second and third-four years in all, making the comment that the plan carried out. by the prisoner was a remarkably cunning one allowing him to posa as the innocent fool of another if discovered.

Cross-examined by Mr. Slade, witness said that while Sergeant Brimble was under bim he gave every satisfaction and his conduct wAS good; he was a good police officer.

These injuries must have beed consed by a blow on the urethra most probably a kick. Deceased was about 56 years of age and was a feeblu mar.

Other evidence was given for the Crown to the effect that the defendant kicked the deceased, who thereupon fell to the ground but afterwards roso-nnd walked away.

Mr. Slade, who stated that he intended to call only one witness for the defence, said the defendant did not go into the brothel for an immoral purpose, but simply to ask a hawker whem ho saw prosecuting, business there if he had a licence. Soeing a constable enter the house a crowd collected to await developments, and were disporsed by the defendant, who put them aside with his open hands und went away. His Lordship-I never gave any instructions not to bind them over.

The Attorney-General added that util he heard that Dr. Koch was not present and Intimated that he would call him under pis recognisances, he was adaware of the fact that he had not been bound over.

His Lordship, in conclusion, said he would represvut the matter to the Gevornweat and ace whether any instructions had been issued. Probably the idea was that Government officera were always bere and would be algeye available.
