That the banks aro manipulating exchange to enit their own enda is proved by the foot that Inst week exchange in Singapore was 1d. per dollar higher than it was in Hongkong. Not- withstanding all this, however, the Eastern banka yovia to think that when the British and Mexican dollars are demonetised they may have |some loft in' thoir vaults and are now talking about the iniquity of a Govorament that will not promise to redeem thom by issuing a now Straits dollar for every one of the old dollars left in their bands. Most people would consider this simply a monstroas proposition, but the banks are of different opinion and seem to think they wors quite entitled to pour millions of dollars, that were not at all required, into the Straits when they were worth about 1s, 8J, and to insist on the Govern- ment rolleoning them with a coin worth 2s. Such being the case, it appears to me that this Chamber of Commercs in appointing threeings bankers to ast on the sub-committen was calling in the wolves to protect the sheep.

Why Mr. Anderson - shaald· have beon appointed a mзtaber of, the sub-committed 1 do not know, as I am not aware that he has may

strong views on the curronoy question, and it is nat generally supposed that his metier is daauce, Mr. Barlo would, in my opinion, has been a winch more suitable person to ust on the sub-- committee, us he has an extended knowledge of business generally, and is now, as was shown in the debate on the currency in the Legislative Council, proaching the gospal of sinking small private differences for the general good-a doctrine that some pooplo might say he had not always believed in.

The following lotter, addressed to the Editor,

SIL-It was with considerable amazement, not mixed with contemptuous amusement, that I read in the Singapore Free Press of June 3 that a sub-committee of the Singapore Chamber of Commercs had been appointed to watch over the change in the currency and to give advice to the Straits Government. The composition of the sub-committas is, to uso a mild tera, paculiar,...consisting as it does of three bankers and ono merchant. Possibly the members of the Singapore Chamber of Com- meres have not considered it worth their while

mission hers, otherwise they might have to read the evidence given before the Con-

chosen differently. Had they read the evidence they would have seen that sil the henkers who were examined were strongly against any change in the currency, and it appeared perfectly clear from what they said that their interests lay in having an unstablə
