THE TROPICAL AGRICULTURIST. MONTHLY RECORD OF INFORMATION FOR PLANTERS OF
Tea. Cacan, Cinchern. Coffee, Indiarabber.
The Enfield system of riding, with which no possible fanit was found, was adopted for the new universal rifle. Five inches was cut off the barrel, which left it a little more than 2ft. lia. long. In this truncated form its range was correspondingly diminished. To correct this deficiency the "twist" of the riffing, which
made one turu iu ten inches, was somewhat
sharpened, and the desired range obtained. Then occurred another difficulty. The increased twist in the barrel set up a very considerable and Lorre destroying recall, or "kiek," when shots were fired through the barrel. This was deemed à very serious defect, inasmuch as in the original Leo-Enfield rifle the recoil had.beon so mini. mised that it was practically imperceptible. Various methods were tried of overcoming this fresh difficulty, and eventually the plan was adopted of widening the barrel-very slightly, of coarse-close to the muzzle, which eased the pressure upon the bullet as it journeyed to the point at which it made its exit.
The now magazine will load ten cartridges from a clip in either one or two motions, or actions, and the sighting of the place is regarded as a very great improvement upon that which it will in a few months supplant. Vations Sugar, Palma, Cotton, Cardamome, Kela,

The Daily Telegraph'a Berlin correspondent writer:-"Set a thief to catch a thief "is a maxim which has been found useful in many walks of life, but never before has it been tried in such an uncompromising and, it must be added, suc- cessful manner, as by Dr. Pere, of Marburg, in the sphere of medicine. This disciple of Galen delivered an address before a brilliant gathering of colleagues on the healing properties of the sting of bees in onses of rheumatism of the joints and musolos, as well as neuralgia. It was known from times immemorial, Dr. Perc pointed out, as a means of casing shoumatism among the lower orders who have no faith in medical science. The first member of the faculty to apply it was the learned physician himself, and 500 successfully-treated cases bear witness to its efficiency. He, therefore, claims the right to regard it as a specific against Mr. M. Benjamin
