The speech of the Prime Minister on Friday (lat May) makes the position of the Gprorament with regard to the corn daty mora incompre honsible than ever. Upon his own admission the tax is noither a burden to the consumer nor a benefit to the farmer. Then why throw away a revenua' of £2,500,000 a year by repealing, duty which, on his own showing, is perfectly barmless, and which, he says, in offset, pelthur injured nor benefits any one? That is this question which the public and numbers of his mpporters are asking but on that point he Icaves us still in the dark and more bewildered then ever, Again, with regard to my letter addressed to the Chambers of Agrisaltare, I ́own that". I find it exceedingly difoult to follow his caning. He objects to my TO. CAMERON VILLAS, PRAK asking the chambers for their support. why did I go to the chambers? For Two Months from middle of June. It was surely not very unreasonable; I have H. W. BIRD,

in the Badgat against the Government and the opormona fordes behind them; that is a most serious and most difleult task to embark on for any one, and still more so for me, with neither funds nor organisation or the means of creating it, or even the aid of a secretary, for a purposo which in essential--riz. getting my case before 542 the public as widely as posible and in a very short time. The chambers, however, have an excellent organisation already existing; they have helped me before; that is why I appeal to them now, and as inferones is to be drawn from the fact that I addressed a letter to them which is not warranted by the terms of the letter itself. But he deprecates also "the lies of argament," which he declares "Mr. Chaplin has used upon this occasion, because he has appealed to the Chambers of Agriculture to oppass the abolition of the tax in their interest, and the only inference

The discouragement which It must give to arable onltivation is not less apparent, and this is the more regrettable since all parties in the State are agreed that it in a watter of the bighost national importance to bring back to the land, and to keep on the land, mors of the people, by increasing, if it is possible, that clans of forming in England. I venture to think that it would have been more to the purposs if the Prime Minister had udeavoured to meat in his aposch eneh objections as things which are raised by my correspondout and by myself in the lotter which I addrased to the chambers
The issues I raised were perfectly plain, and they were as follows:-I objected to the repeal of the daty, because it was imposed last year as a permanent tax and as part of a deliberato policy, the object of which was to widen the basis of car taxation; because it was supported by the Government and by the party by argu- monte which have never yet been sucessfully suxwered, and which have been justified since by the result; because it provides a revenue of £2,500,000 a year with the smallest omeant of injury to any ous; because no one will bene£t by its repeat and we lose the opportunity of giving a gennine boon to the ocasumer, aud especially, to the pooror classes, by a substantial reduction of the duty on tes; and, lostly, because the Chancellor of the Exchequer, by bis inconsiderate nation, has placed his party, the best and most loyal supporters that over a Government had, in a thoroughly falso and Painful position.

For comprehensiveness and practical service this Work stauds unrivalled. All the new words which the Chinese have of late years been com pelled to coin to express the numerous objects is machinery, photography, telegraphy, and in eciones generally, which the rapid advance of foreign relatious has imposed upon them, are hor giron in extenso. Each and every word is fully illustrated and explained, forming exercisse for students of a most instructive nature. Both the Court and Panti i pronunciations are given, the accente
