A pamphlet has ruently bean published in England from t open of-hit. Edgar Grewood. It is the outcome of the author's belief that it wont be interesting to examine the quiltles of modern workers, and to see, in the first place, what improvements can be made in the training of employees to-be; und erandly, whether say cinus can be taken by which the skill of present employees may be increased. To ratain the commercial supremacy which Great Britain bolds, she will have to bring the skill of employer and ployed up to the highest porsible pitch of proficiency.
Mr. Greenwood says:This pamphlet does not laim to solve the employment problem, but it in edmpiled with the object of ventilating the subject. First, the balance of supply and demand was tested as regards certain office workers by means of advertisements inserted ia. daily pstore, and then circolare asking various Were seat to leading employers questions throughout the country representing the chief industries. The results of these dcertissments replies to the questions are given in the and following pages, and my thanks are due to the Grme whose observations appear. It was deemed advisable, for obvious reasons to withhold their names throsghout; tengo the trades alone are designuted."
A Boolion of the pamphlet gires the replies
of employers to the question, "Can you ablain competent employees?" Altogether sixty-four employers representative of various trades were canvassed, and their replies furnish not only a most interesting table of statistics, but also a For instance, in serice of thoughtful comments. regard to junior clerks, the result of the replies is summarised as follow:
In Pugo's Magazine for April Mr. Herbert C. Fyfe gives a short account of the Protector, which has recently been launched at Bridgeport Coop., U.S.A. It differs chiefly from the Hol land and other types of submarines in being ablo to run along on wheels upon the floor of the vesan. Travelling on the bottom is declared to be the most simple, safe and reliable method known of under-water navigation. There are two wheds fitted to the keel, one in advance of the other. They are three feet in diameter, with
