VOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that EL NORIENTE FABRICA DE TABACUS SOCIEDAD ANONIMA carrying on business at Marlin in the Philippine Islande, Antwerp in the Kingdom of Belgina, and elsewhere, as Cigar Manufacturers liave, on the 4th day of December, 1902, applied for the registration in Hongkong in the Register of TRADE MARKS of the following TRADE MARKS 1. The representation of a part of a bridge across river with B spans of arches showing several bulkings sad 2 towers with spires depicted in the background. Above the whole is depicted. soreral stars. and a comst on the tail of which appear I the words "El Cometa Del Oriente." Un. derneath the above is depicted a Spanish cost-of-arms, on one side of the said post- of-arms is depicted the obreres of 3 medals and on the other the reverse, The representation of a bargs with 2 sails sot and a third partly furled sailing towards the shore. On both sides of the said borgs can- none are seen projecting outwards. The barge is decorated with Angs of various nationalities on both sides. In the bow of the barge a woman is depleted standing wearing a crown with her left hand resting

on a shield and her right hand holding downwards on unsheathed sword. A scroll is depictal over the rigging of the with the words Imperio Dai kiunile printed on it.

The representation of a Filipino woman dressed in a rod skirt and loose yellow jacket with flowing black hair and wearing earings and à double necklace of pearls and fancy ornaments on her head with her left hand she is holding the revor of an open cigar box containing olgars whiok is placed on a mound, her right hand resting on a Spanish coat-of-arms, Un ker right side are placed B boxes of cigars the topmost of which in the middle is open sɛd whows 2 bundles of cigara. Above these are printed. the words "La Perla del Oriente" and an-, derneath are the obreres and rerness of 3 medals The above is the covering label of the box in which the cigars or cigarettes are packed. En combination with the above device on one side of the box f which the cigars or cigarettes are packed is the head and shoulders of a Filipino woman in yellow Jacket with Having black bar, some of which is falling over her right shoulder. She is wearing earings and round her neck a double necklace of pearls. The picture. is surrounded with green leaves and pink flowers. Above this in a scroll with the words La Perla del Oriente" printed on it and underneath is depicted another scroll with the words "El Oriente Fabrica de Tobacos Sociedad Apcuima" printed on it. In combination with the above described des vices le the representation of an oval shaped. Tepey design on which a usked child is depicted in a sitting posture on piut cloth. Above the child is depicted à scroll bearing on it the printed words “El Oriente." Beneath this soroll appear the words"El Director" and the dignature "C. Jugenoll" The child is depicted holding upwards in its left hand another soroll on which are the words "Fabrics de Tabacos Sociedad Anonima," This device is used as the closing label of the box in which the cigare er cigarettes are packed.

RELIGION. Professor Deftwich of the University of Berlin last month delivered two lectures before the German Oriental Society on the recent antiquarian discoveries amongst the ruins of the ancient city of Babylon and their bearings

on the Old Testament. After giving a moat interesting account of the high state of civilisa tion attained by the Assyrians, be advanced the theory that the Old Testament" is not an inspired book, but the offspring of Assyrian laws and traditions. He even asserted that the Monotheism of the Jews is derived from the same source, dealed the Messianio prophecies, and lu referring to the New Teslamset denied the Divinity of Christ.
