"I have some things to tell you about Barn- ford. Your Aunt Laure has gone a round of visits, and has left me so much to do, that this must be my excuse for delay in writing.
"I have not picked up strength as readily as writing is a trouble to me--but not to you, to whom I can always open my heart, The sir here is rather too losing for me, and I would perhaps have done better to have gone into some cheep and quiet lodgings on Examoor, where the air is more brasing.
Bat all as God disposes. I must remain hero till Lady Laure retorns, as the has made no responsible for everything. She is now in Ireland, where, however, I do not think she has many relatives; and I fear that the title having been trailed in the mud by the Earl, may make the people there shy of her. As to the estat the Land League has inflicted such privations on the formerly well-to-do families, "that they bave had to cut down expenses in every way. and are indisposed to entertais. However, there Lady Laura is, she is now staying with Lord and Lady Patrickstown, who are con nected, as you know, with your family and with the Brendous. She seems to be happy.
She had a very rough passage from Holy head, and suffered exceedingly. She gave me a graphic account of the voyage, and with details of the sufferings, that might have been spared with advantage. However, there was an oblig. ing and attentive stewardess, who became less amiable only at the last moment. If I am not much mistaken the fault lay rather with your Aunt. I have no doubt that Lady Laura was most exacting on the passage, and forgot to acknowledge this to the satisfaction of the stewardess of her leaving the bout, But this, is surmise.
"I am thankful to say she is now quite re- covered. From that she wys, I gather that the purposes staying as long as she can in Ireland. she dreads the return voyage. But she has not many acquaintances in the Emerald Jele; how ever, she is resolute to make them. and when she choosce she can make herself vastly agree able, none more so Consequently she may- manage to secure a good many invitations to various houses. That is what she is scheming for, and she does not desire to return here till after Midsummer, and when the seas are quite smooth.
"I have been put to some dificulties. Lady Laura wants me to get rid of two of the maids, as not to have to pay their wages, or for their hoop during her absence, and to look ont for fresh ones, and have them in by her reture, whenever that will be. But, really-ons must give a month's notice, sed suitable sorvants do not come when one bistles for them. Besides, these who remain will grumble at extra work put on them, and, although I try to give sa fittle trouble as possible, I am not strong enough to do everything for myself. Bervants now-a- days like to keep to their proper routine and not to have the duties of others thrust on them, even temporarily. Lady Laura has taken her lady's maid with her, a new importation from France, whom you kindly found for her. A bit of news that may interest you concerns the young doctor, Mr. Thomas Bates. He is en- aged to a rather nice girl, I am told, & Miss Brandscombe, who is related to a good many people in the neighbourhood, abe has also money of her own. And the alliance will help to increase his prection. For him, from apr Lessional point of view, it is a good more.
And now, at lest, comes that which I have purposely left to the corclusion of my letter. not because it is a bonnebenche, but quite the contrary, it is something I am reluctant to write, because I know it will cause you pain. But if you do not hear it from me you will from cthers. It isah me! poor Chris-it will make your heart ache, and therefore I grieve to ra. port it. It is that Caplein Fenton is back- rent home. He has committed some errors in South Africa, I believe that he neglected to have on posts, and a convoy under his charge was rushed and taken by the Boors, with some and loss of life to our men, 'As I understand the story, he had no suspicim that the enemy was near, but that hardly justifies the neglect of ordinary precautions. He was fresh to his duties, and had not the experience that here older officers. As the Boers were short of sup boon to them. plies, the, captors of the coaroy was a great
"Bat this is not all.
"There was second disaster, which was more serious. He had received instructions for a movement of concentration on the onomy. Whether he misunderstool his orders, or did not follow them out with suloisut promptness, or whether, as is more likely, the nature of the country prevented their execution, I do not know, Hut the plan failed, and the failure has been attributed to him. So he has been sent
home. I am sure that the fault does not lie at his door, and it is quite possible that it was made by some eise, and the blame has been thrown on Captain Fenton to screen the others.
"Here be it in Barnford, bat does not like anyone to see him, he is in a pitable condition of dejection. I am told, he is quite a broken man. I wish there were someone here to give bim a cheering word. I hear he lesvos for chambers there. Here he was not visited or town almost immediately. I am told he has noticed by any of his old friends, but that may has been because he shut his door against everyone. If he has made mistakes he is suffer ing for them scutely.
