A WALF RECOGNITION. This wearer itself perforce into my business.
King bras, Act II. 1. Cocit Boutflower was walking along a lane under the South Downs. In one hand he carried u mallet and in the other a lacket.
The follow had a quick intelligence, and this the Admiral sought to sharpen. Ho had in- forested him by giving him Mantoll's Wonders of Geology; and the young man ARW & DYW world of idea open hofor him, and a parsuit offered as interesting as it ww novel. A load was lifted from the horizon, and bill and would anfurled a tale. He took keenly to a search after fossils in the chalk quarries on the South norus, and for sharks' teeth in the sand pits of the Weald. He was one day walking” të a distant pit, when he Esard screams for help. and presently saw a Shetland pony galloping along the lase with a boy on its bace, clinging to the mano.
Presently they reached the front of the mansion, and the groom helped the boy from liis saddle, and took charge of the pany.
Perfectly unshished, Cacil walked up the steps to the front door, and would bave opened and entered, but that he was forestalled by the butler.
"Oh, Tronemau," said the child, "ho helped me up when I fell off Shettio, and I'm going to show him the house,"
"But, Sir John, let me first brush you down, you are plastered with mud."
It is still wet," said the boy." This way!" to Cecil, and he conducted him across the ball. Come along. I must tall Mamma that I have had a timble.
Then the child rushed forward, opened a mahogany door and baret in on Lady Fenton, who was seated by the tire, with the newspaper. on the floor, and ter hands on her lap.
"Ob, mamma! I have been thrown off and in such a dirty lane."
Cecil threw himself scross the road, and flourishing basket and hammer alarmed the pony.a It stackoned pace and stopped. Whereupon the hoy fell off, ant holed as he lay in the mud.
Gel up, young yelper," said Cseil; "you ain't art, not you. Yon tambled into a soft spot, that's all-get up and don't be a fool. Mannt your rat of a pony again."
"It's the fault of Gorge howlad the boy, rising to his fot. He was told to look after me, and he would go into the public house, to, see his sister, he saii; and a boy cracked a cart whip and my little Shectio out off and 1 couldn't stop him.'
"They shouldn't 'ave sort a baby like you out on an 'os, but in a pram with a nuss, showing you along. That's my opinion.
"I'm not a baby. I'm ten years old.” "I shouldn't are thought it. You

"Yes, I ball."
"Not if you 'owls; every 'owl takes a quarter of a biach off your stature as you'd be like to 'ave.'
The boy stopped crying.
"Now," said Cecil, Cock up your leg, and I'll shack you onto your perch.
"Bat I'm afraid Shottie will run away with ms again."
I'll walk beside you till we find George as is gone to see 'is poor duur sister. Who the blue blazes may you be?"

The rent of the room occupied by the Club W M. POWELL, LD,
was seven shillings and sixpence a week. This room was on the ground floor, the windows on one side locket on the street, but a single one on the other side into a yard paved with brick.
Dingy as the room sppeared from without, it was cheerful within, especially at night when the gas was lighted and a re-barned in the grute.
here were no curtains in the windows, but there were shutters on the side that gare, on the street.
Economy had been considered, and there was nothing to correspond for the windows that loaked into the yard.
A piano stood at one end athwart on angle, so that the performer in the corner could com- sud the room from the music stool. On the walls were coloured plotures, Millais' Cinderella, and the bay blowing bubbles to advertiso Pears Soap. Also portraits of the Queen and Lord England and the British Rocerts, and inspa Empire,
Miss Lavenhams had been engaged on her cousin's work for four months, Lady Barbara made a pretence of grambling at her niero's abstention on three evenings out of the week, bat Chris was well aware that she was relieved by her absence. The Admiral encouraged her, not openly, but by a word apart occasionally, and with something more substantial, for he was ready to give her whatever she required to meet Current expenses. The gils might suppose that they "ran the show," as they expressed it, with their ha'pence, but it was by no means self-supporting; for in addition to the weekly rent came in the bills for coal and for gas.
Christine had gol to understand the girls, and they to respect her. She was "a good un, not 'igh, and with no nonsense about 'er." And abe learned much about East Ead life.
İs
She discerned that the influencing of one giri principles of order, self-respect and cleanliness had a radiating effect. It helped no culy the girl herself, but the parents as well. It exercised a wholesome influence on their brothers and lovers.

Chris bad tact and sympathy, without which all work done for the suffering and needy is but sounding brass and a tinkling cymbal. Yet, as it cliancts, it is the charitable work that goes about with sounding bones and tinkling gymbals that draws subscriptions, not the still wad MADE BY vertised labour of the tras friends of humanity,
The girls came to understand Chris, as one who could be trusted, as one who had aat an ear alone open, but a heart as well to receive their confidences.
She made mistakes, but no one saw that more readily than herself, or more diligently strovo to rectify them.
Among her relatives and acquaintances-and she came to make many of the latter, there wore
such as ridiculo her work, others who disap- proved (on conscientious scraples), others who misinterpreted her motives. The most wound- ing criticism was that of Lady Laura in a letter. "You are quite right, my dear niece, to take up with good works. Every woman who has made a faux pae diegaises it by a curtesy to My Lady Churity, and philanthropic soap is a sovereign detergout for tarnished reputations."" There was, indeed, much to discourage, but there was more to cheer. Then came a great blow-which fell crushingly. The death of tho Queen. Now it was that one of the benefits of the lab began to reveal ital. The girls had ceased to be absolutely depandet on a single business.
