TELEPHONE SERVICE TO

KOWLOON. -

N W CARLE YAID.

THE DONGKONG DAILY PRESS, SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 28TH 1803

Another step forward in the development of Kowloon has just been made by the laying of a telephone cable for public servies from Hong- Kong to the other side of the Harbour. This has begu dono by the Cking and Jopon Telephons and Electric Co., "Lal", "where"etilor. prise deserves gonerous support at the hands of

the colonial community. The need for telephons connection between Hongkong and her "suburt" is unquestioned; it has in fact been a orying need for a long time. Now the Telephone Company have surmounted the dificulties thut lay in the way and within a few months a subscriber in Hongkong will be able to converse with bis friend and fellow-subscriber in Kowloon without recentse to the Star Ferry. The cable which has just been laid is the heaviest ever put down in the neighbourhood. It weighs about eight tons and is of the eight-core kind. As with the other cables which oroes the

Harbour, it is placed within the protected cable

area, 300 yards or so wide, running from North Point (beyond Bayview Hotel) to Hunghom, Within this strip no vessel is allowed to anchor, it being protected by lights at night and noties-boards during the day. There all cables are lid. At present, it may be interesting to mention, there are three single wiro telephono cables in existence-oue belonging to the police, one to the Dock Company connecting with both Hunghom and Cosmopolitan Docks, and the third to the Godown Company.

The actual laying of the now cable was

carried out without a hitch and was accom“

Mr. E. H. Sharp. ·K.C. (ins ruoted by Mr. Paget Hett of Messrs. Monusey & Bratton, solicitors), appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr. H. F. Pollock, K.C. (instructed by Mr. F. His Lordship in delivering judgment said the facts were undisputed that a collision accurred between the junk and the steamer near the entrance to Čapsuimon Pass.
